3:30-4:30pm - Long Time Comin'

This film documents the experiences of musician Faith Nolan and visual artist Grace Channer, two African-Canadian artists whose works are concerned with issues of race, gender, class and sexuality.

10:15-11:30am - Raisin' Kane - A Rapumentary

This film profiles the independent hip-hop group Citizen Kane as they struggle to gain recognition and respect from the music industry.

1:00-1:30pm Jodie Drake - Blues in My Bread

This rarely seen documentary celebrates the blues and jazz singer Jodie Drake. From her beginnings in Detroit to her many years breaking ground in Canada she consistently promoted Black music and fought to end discrimination against Black performers. Through interviews and performances Browne documents the legendary Drake.

1:30-2:30pm Music - A Family Tradition

This award winning documentary looks at four Black Canadian families whose lives have been influenced by the musical traditions handed down from generation to generation. The film looks at the Biddle and Sherwood families in Montreal, the Richardson family in Toronto, and the King family in Vancouver and covers various genres including Gospel, Jazz and Rhythm & Blues.

3-4:15pm Carry me Home - the Story & Music of the Nathaniel Dett Chorale
2003: Vision TV and Bravo : Directed and produced by Liam Romalis

A portrait of the Nathaniel Dett Chorale which captures founder Brainerd Blyden-Taylor and the 20-member Chorale in performance, giving life to some of the most rousing works of R. Nathaniel Dett, Black Canadian-born composer and conductor. Provides insight into the composer's enduring influence on black music in North America, through interviews with such luminaries as jazz pianist and educator Ellis Marsalis, conductor and arranger Moses Hogan, and Canadian singer Mary Lou Fallis.

4:45-5:45pm Portia White - Think on Me
2000 : Maroon Films : Directed and produced by Sylvia Hamilton

This film is a biography of Nova Scotia born contralto Portia White, who in the 1940' and 50's was often compared to the American Marian Anderson. Using archival film and TV footage, excerpts from recordings, and interviews with family, friends and pupils it portrays a talented, dignified woman who left an important heritage.

5:45-6:15pm Big and the Blues
1981 : National Film Board of Canada : Director, Marrin Canell; Producers, David Banigen, Marrin Canell, Barrie Howells

Profiles jazz musician Clarence Horatius Miller who plays the trombone and shouts the blues. Born in Sioux City, Iowa, of a Sioux Indian father and a black American mother, "Big" now lives in Edmonton.

Saturday May 3

10:00-11:00am Prairie Soul - Black rhythms from the Heartland
1991 : Winnipeg Core Area Initiative : Directed by Mark Block ; Produced by Adrian Peek

Black musicians and dancers in Winnipeg reflect on their craft. Includes archival footage, and interviews with Gerry Atwell, Emile Bisseck, Sandra Graham, June Harris, Piercy Haynes, Zena Bradshaw Haynes, Wynton Marsalis, Charlotte Martin, Glen Matthews, Adrian Peek, Mkenti Sahko and Del Wagner.

11:00-12:00pm Oliver Jones in Africa
1990 : National Film Board of Canada : Directed by Martin Duckworth

Canadian jazz pianist Oliver Jones, bassist Dave Young and drummer Archie Alleyne visit their ancestral African homes and search for common cultural roots as they perform with Nigerian musicians.

1-2:30pm In the Key of Oscar
1992 : National Film Board of Canada : Directed by William Cunningham & Sylvia Sweeney ; Produced by Sylvia Sweeney & Michael Alder

Describes Oscar Peterson's struggle to overcome prejudice in Canada and in the United States and achieve international recognition as a virtuoso jazz pianist who is black.
