MA / MBA Programme
The
Graduate Programme in Art History and the Schulich School
of Business offers a three-year combined programme leading
to both a Master of Business Administration and Master of
Arts degree.
The
combined MA/MBA degree programme offers students a unique
opportunity for study. Graduates of this highly challenging
programme will follow career paths in which knowledge of the
arts and of management and business are required. The MA/MBA
programmes complement each other in focus and offer excellent
preparation for those interested in management careers in
the arts and cultural sector.
Admission
Requirements for the Combined Degree
For
acceptance into this combined programme, students must
meet the application requirements for both the MA and the
MBA as outlined by the university. Students must have a four
year undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in Fine Arts earning
a minimum B+ average. Students must earn a score on the Graduate
Management Admissions Test (GMAT) that meets or exceeds the
minimum score required for admission into the MBA programme.
Students should have relevant work experience within the arts
or cultural industries. (This will be assessed by the admissions
Committee which is made up of the Graduate Programme Director
in Art History, the MBA Arts and Media Coordinator, the Admissions
Officer from the Schulich School of Business and a representative
from the Faculty of Graduate Studies.)
Students
may apply for admission after the successful completion of
one year in either the MBA programme or Art History Graduate
Programme.
The following offers an example of how this year might be
structured:
| Fall Term: |
ARTH
5110.03 Methods I |
| |
ARTH 5120.03 Methods II |
| |
ARTH 5170.03 Museums and Galleries |
| |
|
| Winter Term: |
ARTH 5130.03 Graduate Seminar in Contemporary Issues |
| |
ARTH 5140.03 Grad Art History Seminar |
During
the Intersession and Summer term, students may choose from several courses with a museum and gallery focus that are generally offered
during this period. They may also choose to take MBA courses
during the summer term.
Year 3
MGMT 6100.03 Strategy Field Study
ARTH 5190.03 Apprenticeship(s) (or Art History or cognate course)
ARTH 6010.03 Major Research Paper
Students
may take two semester courses in the MBA programme from the
optional courses related to their specific interest; these courses
might include not-for-profit management courses, legal aspects
in the arts, exporting the arts, entrepreneurial studies, or
management of artistic resources, etc. and should include the
required policy course, if it has not been completed. Courses
may, but need not, be taken from the Arts and Media (ARTM) slate.
In this third year of study, a very fine balance will be required
to ensure that students have the opportunity, in what is likely
to be their final year, to focus on their thesis or major research
paper for their Masters degree which will reflect the focus
of their studies. Note: The Art History Research Paper degree
requires four core courses and five additional courses which
can be fulfilled in art history (including apprenticeships),
arts management or a cognate area. In the case of a thesis-focused
degree, the student would devote his or her art historical studies
in the third year of study to the thesis requirement.
Depending on the specific programme and requirements, students
may be encouraged to take some of these courses during the previous
summer semester.
Programme
Length
The
normal full-time load is 15.0 credit-hours of courses per term.
Students who enroll in the combined programme should be able
to complete it within a three year period. In so doing,
students will meet all of the core programme requirements in
each individual programme. Cognate requirements in each
programme can be filled through course work in the parallel
programme.
Arts
and Media Graduate Diploma
Students may add an Arts and
Media Graduate Diploma to their combined MBA/MA degrees. The
Arts and Media Graduate Diploma requirements can be found on
http://www.bus.yorku.ca/, or in the calendars of the Schulich
School of Business and the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
If students are doing a graduate diploma in Arts and Media Administration,
as well as the two degrees, the summer semester, after their
third year of study, would be an appropriate time to meet the
internship requirement, although some students may be able to
complete an internship at an earlier point in their studies.
Financial Support
A number of scholarships and bursaries are available for
first year students in the MBA programme. Students in
the combined programme who meet the requirements are eligible
for this support for at least one year of study. In addition,
the Programme in Arts and Media Administration offers support
for internships -- particularly in the nonprofit sector -- for
students who meet the criteria (which include meeting the Ontario
Student Awards Programme requirements).
In their second and third years of study, students may be eligible
for research assistantships and teaching assistantships.
