Toy :

A toy is defined by the Petit
Robert as « an object, which a child uses to play”. As we grow older,
we often forget the connotation of the word toy and remember only this
simplistic definition.
Children however, see toys as
their friends, which may play even more important roles during their lives.
Whether it is a soft blanket, pretty doll or small truck, children associate
objects, for a while at least, with sense of safety. Children may sometimes
even identify themselves with the toy.
When a family moves from one home
to another or from one country to another, a child may become confused. All
that they knew growing up suddenly changes: their house and home, their teachers,
their friends from their neighbourhood and school will no longer be around
them. Occasionally, if the move is the result of their parents’ marriage or
divorce, it may even mean that some of the child’s family members may change.
In these types of situations the only things that will stay the same are the
child’s possessions, the toys they bring with them.
It is therefore important when
moving with children, to have a little bag for them to put their favourite
games, blankies and teddy bears in. They will be less
scared and will be less confused with everything happening around them. With
their favourite “objects” at their side, a child will find stability even
though they are going through big changes.
