Former York hockey player wins gold with Team Canada

Former York University hockey player Jim Hulton helped lead Team Canada to a gold medal performance at the World Junior Hockey Championship on January 4th in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Canada defeated Russia 6-1 for its 11th World Junior gold medal and first since 1997.

Hulton (Hon. BA '93), an assistant coach with Team Canada, was a left winger with the York men's hockey team from 1989 to 1993 and was team captain in his final year. In four seasons with York he tallied 13 goals and 30 assists.

Hulton, who is head coach of the Ontario Hockey League's (OHL) Kingston Frontenacs, led Canada's National Under-18 Team as the head coach to a gold medal at the 2002 Eight Nations Cup. He was an assistant coach with Canada's National Under-18 Summer Team which won the 2001 Six Nations Under-18 Tournament in the Czech Republic.

The native of Wolfe Island, ON coached the Belleville Bulls for three years prior to joining Kingston, including an OHL Eastern Conference regular season championship in 2001-2002.

Brent Sutter of the Western Hockey League's (WHL) Red Deer Rebels served as head coach for Team Canada, while Peter DeBoer of the OHL's Kitchener Rangers joined Hulton in the assistant's role.

Canada dominated the opposition throughout the World Junior Championship, outscoring its opposition 41-7 in six games.
