10 Essentials for Chapter Success

  1. Set goals
Setting annual goals will help keep the chapter’s planning on track. And be sure to make them SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-specific).

  2. Assign responsibilities
Your volunteers are incredibly important and valuable. Assign tasks to members and No one can do it all – share the work and you will inevitably share the success.

  3. Plan ahead
Identify a few key goals for the year and work towards accomplishing them. When planning an activity, the more notice the better!

  4. Keep in contact with the Alumni Office
The Alumni Office is working hard to build and use our resources to serve the university and our alumni more effectively. We are here to offer you support and guidance. Not sure how to connect with York grads in your area? Need some advice on planning an event?  A quick phone call or email can save you time and energy.

  5. Recruit new members
Always be on the lookout for potential new chapter members, it will keep your chapter energized and motivated.

  6. Get online
Encourage chapter members and other York grads to utilize the online community to connect with classmates and update their information.

  7. Variety
Plan a diversified calendar of events that appeal to a range of ages, interests, and budgets.

  8. Share your success
Chapters are always in search of new ideas or chapter best practices. Share your stories, advice, suggestions with fellow York alumni chapters.

  9. Evaluate
As soon as the event is over, identify what worked and areas of improvement. This information is invaluable for the planning of future activities. Use the post-event report to share this information with the Alumni Office as it may help other chapters in the planning of their events. Remember: you cannot judge the success of an event on the attendance alone.

  10. Have Fun!
