Course Description: This course explores various dimensions of the global south, with emphasis on political-economy and development. It examines the similarities and differences between various local experiences in the global south and explores their contemporary dynamic in a historical context. The course begins by briefly examining the Global South’s colonial history, and then goes on to examine several ‘policy imperatives’ that have been undertaken in the Global South. We will explore modernization, aid and trade, the developmental state, women’s empowerment, and similar other approaches. In the second half, the course will also focus on specific countries.
