Welcome to the new Department of Communication Studies
As of 1 July 2009, we have become our own department in the new Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies. This has meant the amalgamation of the program of Communication Studies and the stream of Communication Studies in the School of Social Sciences at Atkinson.
For returning Communication Studies majors, that is, students in years 2, 3 and 4, please be advised that your Honours programs (in either Arts or Atkinson) have been grandfathered, and we will ensure that you will get all the courses you need in order to graduate. If you wish to transfer to another of our Honours degrees, please consult the mini-calendar, and/or come to an advising session so that we can help you decide which Honours Communication Studies degree to follow.
If you are a returning York student but wish to change your major to Communication Studies, please download the Change of Major/Program Form from the R.O’s website and bring it to the Department’s main office to be signed
If you are a new student in first year, you will have been advised in the New Students’ Advising Centre, and will have enrolled in AP COMN/AP SOSC 1310 9.0, our first year “Introduction to Communications” Course. We wish you well both at York and in our department; should you seek advice please drop by our main office to arrange an appointment with the UGPD or another faculty member. We especially encourage you to come for advising in the spring of 2010 for information on upper-level courses.
Please consult the new mini-calendar to see our new programs. We are especially pleased to be offering a new Honours International Bachelor of Arts (iBA) in Communication Studies.
We are working on our web pages—our goal is to provide you with the information you need about our degree options, current courses, and professors. We also want to let you know about upcoming events related to our department, and about future career paths you can pursue. Check out the new courses we’re offering for 2009/10
