Math Background Quiz
This quiz is designed to help you review your knowledge of elementary trigonometry and algebra and to identify any gaps in preparation you may have in these areas. All of the questions represent material that we would typically expect all high school students to be familiar with from their high school math courses.
We have found that such gaps are not uncommon and can hurt performance in first-year math courses. Fortunately, such gaps, once identified, are easily dealt with. It is a good idea to deal with these, if possible, before you start your first year courses.
After you have written the quiz, we will provide you with various online resources to help you do so. As well, you have access to the free Math Review Sessions listed below.
To take the quiz click HERE. Expect to spend about 60 minutes on it.
August Math Review Sessions
Bethune is offering free four-day Math Review Sessions to those who may be having problems in first year math. Their purpose is to familiarize students with important basic algebraic and trigonometric concepts that may not have been fully covered in high school and which can often significantly hurt performance in university math courses.
These sessions are 4 days long in total, Mon-Thurs, starting on Aug 13, Aug 20 or Aug 27. They will run from 10:30-12:30 and then again from 1:30 to 3:30 on each of the four days, for a total of 16 hours. On the first day (Monday), the sessions start at 10 am.
Note on the week of Aug 27 the sessions go from Mon-Friday. This will allow you to go to your academic orientation and still have a full 4-days of math help.
To register click HERE (Note: you are automatically registering for all 4 days)
What students are saying:
"This review was very helpful, and I would highly recommend that the university keeps funding this program. The professor who was tutoring my section was very friendly and very helpful. He explained all of the concepts thoroughly and was very patient with every student in the class. Not only did this review give me quite a bit of confidence going into my first year, but it also allowed me to recall many important mathematical concepts that would have taken me a while to remember had I not attended this session. I strongly encourage York University to continue with this program, and to promote it so that more students participate, because I know that I am very thankful that I had the opportunity to do so."
I.P., August 2011
"I will be attending York University this coming Fall. A couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to attend York's four day math tutorials. I am extremely grateful for these tutorials. Not only did they help me learn concepts that were not covered at my high school, but they refreshed my memory. Most importantly, the low student-to-professor ratio helped ease the anxiety I felt about the university transition. I know for a fact that everyone who attended the tutorials (in my section) found them useful. I want to say thank you for this opportunity and I hope that York continues with this program."
