Dear Bethune College Students,
Welcome to York University, and welcome to Bethune College.
Bethune College is a community of students, staff and faculty, most of whom are interested in the same things that you are. We study and teach Science, Science and Technology Studies, Kinesiology and more. There's a good chance that we're in the same classes – or that we're teaching them. The Bethune community plays sports together, houses York’s largest collection of clubs, eats and socializes together. We also work hard in the classroom.
But it's not always enough just to work hard to be successful in your studies. You also have to work smart. You don't want to be that student who in her fourth year learns a new study skill that increases her grades while decreasing her reading time. Or who is about to graduate and realizes that he's been in the wrong field of study all along. Or who learns that she has the wrong paperwork two minutes before the deadline. Don't regret not having known something when it's too late; instead, discover our insiders' tips as soon as possible, when you're still in your first year.
You can benefit from the Bethune community's experience by turning to the Academic Advisor when you need advice or information that will make your university time more successful. Or you can consult other, more experienced students for counsel. These knowledgeable students make up Bethune's SOS: the Student Ombuds Service, a one-stop student support centre. Come in for advice, resources, and referrals from our successful upper-year Bethune students. All volunteers, our SOS advisors know how the York system works; they know what it takes to do well here, and want to help you.
