Course Synopsis
Engineering design and professional practice within economic, health, safety,
environmental, social and other constraints, including case studies, teamwork,
3D modeling, and a team design project. Communication skills are emphasized,
including a mandatory writing workshop. Three lecture hours per week. Two terms.
Six credits. Note: Open only to students in the Engineering program. Corequisite:
SC/ENG 1001 1.00.
Technical Writing Course
Note that technical writing is now a separate course (ENG1001) and will be provided by Dr. Caroline Roberts.
Like ENG1000, ENG1001 is a compulsory course for Engineering students. You
should be enrolled in both ENG1000 and ENG1001. Click here

Class Timetable
The lecture schedule for this course is:
Design Projects
Attendance of the assignment 3 group design projects is
mandatory. Attendance will be taken. The TA will run a tutorial where final preparation and practice dry-runs of your presentation is
encouraged.
Clickers
Each student will require a 'clicker' personal response device to answer
in-class tests for course credit. For information on how to obtain a clicker
click here. Note if you already have a clicker, you
only need to ensure it is registered to your YorkU account.
Mid-term Examination
This test will be two hours in duration. Students may bring a calculator, one
(double sided letter sized) page of notes and the course text (Engineering by
Design, G. Voland) with them into the examination. The test will start promptly
at the announced time. The exam will cover the entire engineering syllabus (see
the published lecture notes) and will test your ability to apply the engineering
techniques we have developed in the course. A basic knowledge of physics,
mathematics and computer science (as developed by other first year engineering
courses) will be assumed.
