For Openers: The Art of Film Titles at York Quay Centre (Harbourfront), sponsored by the Powerplant Gallery.

" The Power Plant, Canada's leading non-collecting contemporary art gallery, is excited to present San Francisco media historian David Peters on November 8 as part of the gallery's 2001-2002 International Lecture Series.

In a presentation titled For Openers: The Art of Film Titles, David Peters explores the complex relationships between motion picture title sequences and the popular entertainments they adorn. In a montage of modern classics (dating from the 1950s to the present day), Peters shows how this unique art form has evolved over the years, revealing the creative strategies behind some of the most dramatic and engaging experiments in graphic imagery for film.

David Peters has researched thousands of films to create an extensive collection of title sequences and short films on design that span the history of cinema. In addition to his pioneering work in media history, Peters is a strategist at MetaDesign, a firm specializing in branding, information and interaction design.

For Openers: The Art of Film Titles has been playing to packed houses across the U.S., including the Film Society of Lincoln Center, New York; Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus OH; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; SFMoMA, San Francisco; Walker Arts Center, Minneapolis; and the Pacific Film Archive, Berkeley CA, amongst others.
