WebCt and Computing Information

Computer Assisted Writing Centre <http://www.yorku.ca/cawc/>
Our class has been registered with the Computer Assisted Writing Centre, located in the Scott Library, rm 530. Because we will be workshopping some of our writing online, it is important that everyone have access to basic instruction. Being a part of the centre means that you will be able to get hands on computing instruction, from basics to critical skills to web page design  -- theCentre hold workshops throughout the term. You will also be able to drop in during library hours to work on the computers.

Webct (for general discussion and participation in online writing circles – part of your participation grade)
For facs 2960, we'll be using a web-based course management system known as WebCT. It is known as "a flexible, integrated environment where [professors and students] can use the latest technology to foster inquiry, encourage discourse and inspire collaboration. Essentially, webct operates like a security-protected webspace, just for our class. We’ll use it to post writing, critically and constructively evaluate work produced in this class, and share information, ideas etc. My principle rationale behind introducing technology to this classroom is to foster the intellectual community we are building here and to increase your opportunities for exchange and learning. Taking part in these exchanges is mandatory (and should be fun ;).

What do I need?
  • All you need to use WebCT is access to a web browser such as Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer. It is also useful (but not strictly necessary) to have the more common plug-ins such as Real Player. You will also need to enable Java in your browser. See Download Options in the Quick Links menu.

How do I get an account?
  • You must use the MAYA computer account management system to activate your WebCT account. You can access MAYA from the website: maya.yorku.ca
  • After you log into MAYA, choose Activate an Account, then choose WebCT (*not* 'arts webct') and follow the instructions to select your WebCT password.
  • Your WebCT username is your regular yu123456 username.
