My first day of 4-year-old kindergarten, I panicked. I remember some other kids crying and refusing to join the group. Other kids seemed terribly composed and were already working at the sand box or colouring. I didn't seem to fit into either group but knew, even then, that I'd better join in somehow. I grabbed the closest toy -- a plastic bowling pin -- and picked someone I wanted to be friends with. Then I snuck up on him from behind while he was colouring and hit him in the head, hard.
