About the Event
Wondering what you can do with your undergraduate Psychology degree? Want to meet York Alumni and other Psychology undergrads who graduated and are currently enjoying exciting careers?
During this panel professionals with undergraduate Psychology degrees will share their personal stories, how their career paths took them from graduation to where they are now, what knowledge, skills and experience helped them succeed in their jobs and what types of opportunities are available for those who study psychology on the undergraduate level. The panel will be moderated by one of the Career Centre's team members and followed by an open forum where students will have an opportunity to ask the panelists their own questions.
Participating Panelists
Joanne Permaul
Research Associate, Mount Sinai Hospital
Alumna: Specialized Honours BSc Psychology, York University, 1988
Even before I graduated from York with a Specialized Honours BSc in Psychology, I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in health research. For more than two decades I have been working as a Family Medicine Research Associate in Toronto hospitals. When I’m not engaged in my career, I am busy completing a Master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Research and trying to keep up with my 8 year-old daughter.
Aymie Lomond
Psychiatric Crisis Worker, Youthdale Treatment Centres
Alumna: BSc Psychology, York University, 2010
I began university with the high hopes and dreams of a recent high school graduate, believing that I was going to change the world. I had originally planned to use my psychology degree to help me understand the children I wanted to teach, yet through university,I became more interested in working with a smaller population of children. After university, I went to college to put theory to application and now work in a secure treatment centre for children with mental health issues, where I can change the world one heart at a time.
Glen Matadeen
Employment Coach, University of Toronto
Alumni: HBA Psychology, York University, 1995
As an Employment Coach at the University of Toronto, I excite, energize and educate students about their potential and the possibilities of having a great career. Through the combined use of coaching, self-management and counselling techniques, I engage students in understanding how to clearly define their unique talents and create their own career success.
I worked as a Work/Study student at York Career Services and when I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, through networking I got a job at U of T. I then completed a Master's Degree in Education at OISE. In addition, I completed a Diploma in Training and Development and courses in Solution-Focused and Co-Active Coaching. I am also certified in MBTI testing and CareerLeader®, a Harvard developed career assessment program.
