About Learning Disability Services (LDS)
York's Learning Disability Services began as a pilot project in 1985 as a result of a successful funding grant application by Dr. Harold Minden to The Counselling Foundation of Canada. Currently, LDS is a unit within Counselling & Disability Services and is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and is supported by York University.
York University has policies in place to ensure all students have equal opportunity to attain their educational goals. If you are a student with a learning disability you may be eligible for academic accommodations. We encourage you to review this web site and to consider the benefits of contacting LDS. The primary aim of LDS is to provide confidential support for students identified with learning disabilities, ADHD or Autism Spectrum Disorders in order to facilitate their academic, personal and career goals.
This web site includes information about:
- York University's official policies and procedures for students with disabilities;
- educational support (academic accommodations, access to assistive technology, learning strategy support, psycho-educational assessment, degree-credit course LLS1000: Language and Learning Seminar)
- financial support (Bursary for Students with Disabilities, various scholarships and bursaries accessed through the Student Financial Profile)
- social support (various groups and workshops)
- career support (career counseling, career mentorship program)
- Arrange for reasonable academic accommodations for students with learning disabilities to help maximize their educational experience.
- Encourage students with learning disabilities to become as independent as possible by familiarizing them with university policies and procedures and campus resources.
- Increase awareness in the campus community about learning disabilities
