Applying to York
York University actively encourages applications from students with disabilities. Admissions Committees select academically qualified candidates for admission by examining each applicant's academic record and the relationship of any extenuating circumstances. Current application procedures are subject to change. Please verify procedures directly with the relevant department.
Students with LDs who choose to identify themselves in the application process have the opportunity to apply under a modified admissions procedure which is coordinated by LDS and the Office of Admissions. Under this procedure, written supporting documentation in the form of a comprehensive psychoeducational assessment report from a qualified professional (usually a licensed psychologist) stating the nature of the LDs and any extenuating circumstances must be submitted for consideration by the Admissions Committee.
The report should include the results (including subtest scores) from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale - third edition (WAIS-III), or from acceptable alternatives such as the Woodcock - Johnson Psychoeducational Battery - Revised or the Stanford Binet Intelligence Scale, as well as other standardized measures of achievement and information processing (note: Guidelines for Documentation of LDs are available from the Office of Admissions, York University). Staff from LDS and the Office of Admissions review applications in an attempt to determine whether the applicant has the potential to succeed in the university environment.
In order to be eligible for support services from LDS, a psychoeducational report must indicate that the student has specific LDs. We prefer to receive psychoeducational assessment reports which have been completed within 3 years of the student's anticipated start-date at York University. However, we will accept psychoeducational reports documenting the presence of LDs completed by a qualified professional (usually a psychologist or professional under the supervision of a psychologist) within the past 5 years (or in the case of mature students, a report completed while they were attending secondary school).
Applicants should also submit "Identification, Placement and Review Committee" (IPRC) recommendations pertaining to the student for each year in secondary school (if available) and a letter from the special education personnel at the student's high school or college stating the nature, extent, and rationale for Program modifications that were deemed appropriate during the student's last two years of secondary school.
