Workshop for Service Providers
York University is the site of Project ADVANCE, a summer institute which aims to prepare students with language learning disabilities for success in their post-secondary studies. This initiative is offered through Learning Disability Services at York University and is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.
As a part of Project ADVANCE's mandate, we engage in community outreach with respect to the transition issues that students with learning disabilities face when entering post-secondary. This winter, as a part of that mandate, we will be holding a one-day workshop for service providers on:

The workshop will focus on:
- Advocacy skills required at the post-secondary level including how to deal with disclosure to staff, faculty, and peers
- Transition programs and supports at all post-secondary institutions
- admissions procedures, modified admissions, and policies for students with learning disabilities will be discussed by the Manager, Information Services of Admissions
- Project ADVANCE
- 6 week program
- 9am to 4pm, Monday to Thursday
- On-line teaching component modeling on-line environments
- Available to any student diagnosed with a learning disability entering ANY post-secondary institution
- Updated Assessments – what the requirements are for support
- Possibilities regarding updating
- Funding sources
- ADHD
- Accommodations and supports students might have access to at their post-secondary institution and the potential costs involved. Discussion will focus on defining and the granting of accommodations like
- Flexible deadline
- Formula sheets
- Cue cards
- Use of a dictionary
- Transition courses
- Accommodations for students requiring higher levels of support such as those with an Aspergers diagnosis, PDD, and on the autism spectrum
- Academic readiness skills required for post-secondary level work and how students can be supported when there is a gap between their course demands and their skills
- Role of high school service providers in preparing their students with the transition in their final year of high school and development of a transition portfolio
- Accommodations for students who might have more than one diagnosis i.e., LD/ADHD and LD/psychiatric disabilities
Registration is limited. A $40 registration fee is required and covers the cost of handout materials, morning coffee breaks and lunch. Receipts will be provided for parking.
