The Learning Disabilities Tutoring Program

Over the years, some students have chosen to use outside sources of funding in order work with a language skills tutor provided by LDS by signing a contract with us. Effective September 2010, we have decided that having students hire and pay language skills tutors directly will allow LDS to provide a better level of academic support by allowing us to make optimal use of our professional staff in LDS. It will also make our services more accessible to students who do not have access to alternate forms of funding.

After a careful review of best practices in use by our colleagues in post-secondary institutions across Ontario, we have determined that we can provide a higher quality of academic support by better utilization of our professional staff. Rather than devoting time primarily to administrative tasks related to the tutoring program, our professional staff now will be able to provide critical learning strategy support directly to students.

To that end, we plan to have one full time staff member and one part-time staff member who can provide learning strategy and language skills support to students. We will also be offering small group sessions on learning strategies specifically designed for students with learning disabilities throughout the academic year. At the same time, LDS will maintain a roster of potential language skills tutors that will be made available to students upon request. LDS will provide training to the tutors and those who participate will be put on our roster of tutors. In this way, students will continue to be able to hire a tutor, as well as have access to learning strategy support from our staff.

The roster of potential language skills tutors will be available to students by contacting LDS reception at 416-736-5383. Beginning in September 2010, students who wish to make appointments with our LDS staff members for learning strategy support can call our LDS reception at 416-736-5383 or can come in to the office to make an appointment.

We are looking forward to more students being able to access learning strategy/ language skills support in this format – both 1:1 and in small group format — together with the option of students accessing language skills tutoring when warranted.
