Eligibility & Confidentiality
Eligibility
You are eligible for personal counselling services at CDS if you are a York University student who is currently registered and enrolled in courses (or a graduate student working on other academic requirements). If you are taking a term off you may request a one-time consultation with a counsellor in order to obtain suggestions regarding possible referrals in the community.
Glendon students can access personal counselling services at CDS Glendon site, Glendon Hall E103, 416-487-6709.
We strive to ensure counselling sessions with an assigned Personal Counsellor are scheduled as soon as possible after the initial meeting. In some cases, however, you may be referred to another campus service or to an off-campus resource.
Beyond the initial appointment, the offer of further service through Personal Counselling Services is dependent on a number of variables including, but not limited to, the following: (Please note, however, that even if you think you fall into one of the categories listed below and are ineligible for ongoing service we encourage you to come for an initial appointment as we may be able to help you in other ways and/or give you referrals to more appropriate services.)
- We do not provide all types of counselling services, therefore you may be referred to another counselling service or refused service if we deem it clinically appropriate to do so (e.g. if your concerns are beyond the capacity of this office to effectively treat).
- We work on a relatively short-term model and may need to refer you to another service equipped to handle long-term treatment.
- At certain times of the year, due to excessive demand on our services, we may refer you to an outside agency better able to meet with you on a more timely basis.
- We reserve the right to deny further services to any individual who abuses or misuses services in any manner (e.g. non-compliance with treatment, frequent missed appointments, etc.)
- We see our clients on a voluntary basis and do not provide counselling for those who seek services for court-ordered or forensically-oriented treatment.
Confidentiality
We hold all aspects of clients’ involvement with CDS in utmost confidence.
Personally identifiable information regarding individuals using our services is not discussed with outside parties (e.g. parents or professors) without prior written consent of the client. Receptionists and other staff do not acknowledge to anyone making such inquiries whether or not an individual is a client of CDS.
Client records are maintained for 15 years after the date of the last contact and are then destroyed.
Note: Counsellors are ethically and/or legally allowed or required to disclose confidential information to the appropriate authorities under certain circumstances. See our privacy statement for further information.
