Groups & Workshops

For many issues that university students face, group counselling can be the optimal treatment choice. Talking in a group about one’s emotional, physical, academic, interpersonal, social, and family problems can help reduce distress and bring insight and change.

At PCS, we offer various groups to address the needs of our students. Some groups (themed counselling process groups) may focus on a specific topic, e.g. body image, grief and loss. In other groups, (counselling process groups) the issues to be discussed each week arise from the members rather than being initiated by the leader. Personal concerns or problems from everyday life, relationships with friends, family members or significant others may be discussed. And participants may discuss their reactions (thoughts and feelings) to events or situations in their lives – eg., the stress or anxiety associated with school or with relationships, the feelings of sadness or depression that they are experiencing, etc.

Our current offerings fall into the following categories:

Counselling Process Groups:
These groups are offered on an ongoing basis and students may enter the group throughout the year. The groups are led by staff counsellors and are scheduled at various times during the week in an attempt to accommodate students’ schedules. Access to these groups is available through a personal counseling intake session.

Themed Counselling Groups:
Groups for students dealing with specific issues such as Disordered Eating/Body Image or Grief and Loss; meet once a week throughout the academic year. Access to these groups is available through a personal counselling intake session.

Workshops:
Workshops are one-time only sessions on specific topics (e.g. Managing Anxiety) that are offered to students at various times throughout the academic year. Students may register for workshops through Reception in N110 Bennett Centre.

Winter 2013 Themed Groups:

Coping with Grief & Loss Group
Even when a death is anticipated, losing someone close to you is a disruptive life experience that may leave you feeling disoriented and without direction. The feeling of being very much alone and the feeling that no one else could possibly understand what you’re going through are normal reactions to the pain of loss. Talking with others who are also grieving can help you as you struggle with your own grief.

This confidential group will offer you the opportunity to talk with other students who find themselves on a similar journey, share your experiences, and listen to how others are dealing with their struggle, while developing your own unique ways of coping.

This group will run Monday mornings throughout the winter term. Students interested in taking part in should come to N110 Bennett Centre to book a personal counselling intake. Following the intake session, a time will be set to meet with one of the group’s facilitators.
