Buying Fair Trade Coffee ensures that farmers get a fair price for their harvests. It guaranties to poor farmers organized into cooperatives around the world a living wage (minimum price of $1.26/pound regardless of the volatile market); much needed credit at fair prices; and long-term relationships.
McMaster University recently developed a Fair Trade Purchasing Policy for all university suppliers and retailers. This policy gives coffee drinkers the choice between coffee that meets "fair trade" standards and coffee that does not. The policy states that Fair Trade coffee will be clearly marked, available and priced such that cost alone will not be an overriding factor in selection.
Isn't it time that coffee
drinkers at York University
had the choice
of FairTrade Coffee?
