ReMaking
KM6: Childhood
Memories of Santa Cruz Bolivia
ARTIST
TALK/PHOTOGRAPHIC PRESENTATION
SoJin
Chun, Communications, York
The
series of photographs in ReMaking KM6 illustrates the search for my
past upon returning to my childhood home of Santa Cruz,
Bolivia. In this journey, I returned to the place where my
hybrid identity emerged and where I began to live in the diaspora.
While I embrace my Korean heritage, I often felt greater nostalgia
for Santa Cruz, a childhood paradise that remained in the webs of my
memories until recently. In April 2008, I returned to Santa
Cruz in search of all of the people and places that lingered in my
mind since my departure. Through this process, I experienced first
hand the fragmented nature of my childhood memory. Though I
re-encountered familiar narratives, I also became aware of the
social and political realities of an area fighting for autonomy from
the rest of the country. While photographing everyday reality
in Santa Cruz, the search for my past became an exercise in forming
new memories in the present.
