CURRICULUM COMMITTEE
(Extract from Report to Faculty Council -
[FC-72-73-48])
1. Considers departmental and divisional submissions and recommends to Faculty Council approval of new courses and cancellation of existing ones;
2. On its own initiative, or in response to complaints, reviews and report on the academic quality of the current curriculum of the College;
3. Has a particular responsibility for special programmes of the College, e.g. General Education, Canadian Studies and the bilingual aspects of the Curriculum.
Notes:
Curriculum Committee is responsible for the "content" of a course, i.e. it must satisfy itself that the material to be taught is academically sound within the context of the Glendon programme. It should also ensure that the "means" used will lend themselves to the attainment of the objectives set, including the adequacy of the booklist, and the extent to which the course will embody lectures and seminars, reading under supervision, and learning in the Community.
Curriculum Committee does not approve the introduction of new programmes, but once a new programme is introduced it comes under the Committee's jurisdiction. The Committee has no responsibility for the allocation of resources. However, if in reviewing an existing course or a proposed new course it discerns evidence of a possible resource-allocation problem that might affect the academic quality of the course, Curriculum Committee may bring this to the attention of the Policy and Planning Committee. Approval of a course by the Curriculum Committee does not in any way imply that the resources required to mount it will be made available in any particular year.
The Committee shall require surveys to be undertaken of students' opinions of the content and format of courses, and shall issue guidelines to the departments and divisions concerning questions for inclusion in surveys so as to elicit information needed for the Committee's purposes.
