YorkNet Setup and Configuration

Hardware Requirement - Network Adapter

  • A 10BaseT Ethernet Network Adapter/Card setup with the proper up to date manufacturer’s driver for the computer system.  Contact the computer vendor for assistance with Network Adapter installation and driver installation.

Hardware Requirement - Network Cable

  • A good quality straight-through RJ 45 Ethernet network cable Category 5 UTP or better.

Setup and Configuration - Compatible Computer Systems

  • Note: To use YorkNet, a computer in good working order is necessary.  The computer should have all critical updates for the operating system, and an AntiVirus program that has recent virus definitions.  Symantec Antivirus is available FREE to the York University community.  Click here for Important Notes.

     
  • The YorkNet network uses a network service call DHCP.  Most computers brought from home already use DHCP network service with home routers or home high-speed Internet service.  Setup and configuration instructions for YorkNet service are available for:

 

 

 

Windows XP (no service pack) and Windows 2000/ME/98 are no longer supported by Microsoft.  If the computer system gets blocked on YorkNet for a virus infection, the computer will need to be upgraded to use Windows XP Service Pack 2 before the unblock request can be processed.
