Windows XP Service Pack 2 setup and configuration

The AirYork network uses a network service called DHCP. Most computers brought from home already use DHCP network service with home wireless access points and routers used with home high-speed Internet service.  Here are the setup instructions for AirYork service.

If the installation of network components are required during these instructions, you will be required to provide the Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD.

These steps were done using Windows XP Service Pack 2.

  1. Go to the Start menu/button, and select the Control Panel.

  1. If the Control Panel looks like the above diagram, click on Switch to Classic View rather than Category View so that it looks like the diagram below.

  1. In the Control Panel window, double-click on the Network Connections icon.  The window should now be Network Connections.

  2. This step may be skipped if there is no Network Bridge in the Network Connections.  If the Wireless Network Connection or any Connection is under a Network Bridge, right-click and remove them from the Bridge.  The Network Bridge can also be deleted by right-clicking on it and choosing delete.

  3. In the Network Connections window, right-click on the Wireless Network Connection icon and select Properties.

  4. In the Wireless Network Connection Properties window, make sure Client for Microsoft Networks and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) have checkmarks beside them.  File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks should not be checked for computer security reasons.  It may be helpful to put a checkmark beside Show icon in the notification area when connected to see when there is a wireless connection.  Click on the Wireless Networks tab.

  5. Under the Wireless Networks tab, make sure there is a checkmark beside Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings.  Click on the General tab.

  6. Under the General tab, click and highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then click the Properties button.

  7. In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window, make sure that Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are selected.  Click the Advanced… button.

  8. In the Advanced TCP/IP Settings window.  Click on the DNS tab.

  9. Under the DNS tab, make sure that Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes is selected.  Make sure that there is a checkmark beside Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix.  Make sure that Append these DNS suffixes (in order) is not selected.  Make sure there is no checkmark for Register this connection’s addresses in DNS.  Click on the WINS tab.

  10. Under the WINS tab, make sure that there is no checkmark beside Enable LMHOSTS lookup.  Make sure that Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP is selected.  Click on the Options tab.

  11. Under the Options tab, click and highlight TCP/IP filtering, then click on the Properties button.

  12. Make sure that there is no checkmark beside Enable TCP/IP Filtering (All adapters).  Make sure that Permit All is selected for TCP Ports, UDP Ports, and IP Protocols.

  13. Click the OK button to close the TCP/IP Filtering window.

  14. Click the OK button to close the Advanced TCP/IP window.

  15. Click the OK button to close the Internet Protocol TCP/IP Properties window.

  16. Click the OK button to close the Wireless Network Connection Properties window.

  17. In the Network Connections window, right-click the Wireless Network Connection icon again and select Properties.

  18. In the Wireless Network Connection Properties window, click on the Configure button.

  19. The name of the window will correspond with the specific brand of the Wireless Network Adapter on the computer.  Click on the Advanced tab.

  20. Under the Advanced tab, if there is a Property such as Transmit Rate or Speed or something similar to it, make sure the Value selected is Automatic or some sort of Auto value. Also make sure that the Standard is set for 802.11b.  The properties and values are different from one brand of wireless network adapter/driver to another.

  21. Click the OK button to close the window

  22. Close the Network Connections window.

  23. The computer will now be ready to connect to an AirYork wireless network/signal (if not already connected to AirYork).

  24. It is recommended that the computer be restarted at this point to make sure the settings have taken effect.
