Visiting Researcher/Practitioner Program
Purpose
This
program is designed for professionals throughout the world as well as in
Canada and who work in refugee protection and who would like to develop their
knowledge of the global refugee system and how it is articulated in
Canada. It is a non-degree, non-credit, professional development
program.
Goals
-
Develop research skills and familiarity with different stakeholders
(government, NGO, refugees), and research and policy development
within a Canadian context through a hands on, experiential approach
-
Gain awareness of the Canadian refugee determination system, refugee
rights and settlement services
-
Develop networks within Canada as well as international linkages
Description
-
Duration: one year, subject to renewal. Other options include by
semester (September – December, January – April, May – August)

Located at the Centre for Refugee Studies as a visiting researcher
with an office, a telephone, computer, email and internet access
-
Participation in CRS seminars throughout the academic year
-
Participation in the CRS Summer Course, an internationally acclaimed
eight-day postgraduate training course for academic and field-based
practitioners working in the area of forced migration
-
Attendance at the Canadian Council for Refugees (CCR) conferences
and working group meetings (2 Consultations and 2 Working Group
meetings per year) - CCR is an umbrella organization of 180
organizations across Canada who provide services to refugees and
immigrants

Opportunities to attend other refugee-related conferences and
meetings in the Toronto area (e.g. Toronto Refugee Affairs Council)
-
Participation in various research development meetings at CRS
throughout the year with CRS Director and staff
-
Involvement in research projects
-
Meet with faculty, lawyers, front line organizations and other
decision makers who deal with refugee issues, including site visits
to Toronto area NGOs, refugee law offices, etc.

Opportunity for a placement at a local refugee service providing
agency
-
An opportunity to audit certain courses offered through CRS’
certificate and diploma programs

Access to the CRS Resource Centre and the York University library
-
Be provided with a comprehensive reading list
Outcomes
-
Improved knowledge of the Canadian refugee system, refugee rights
and settlement services for refugees
-
Developed national and international linkages with professionals and
front line workers working with refugees
-
A letter from CRS confirming status and activities as Visiting
Researcher/Practitioner
Fees:
Per Year (12 months): CAD$7,500
Per Semester:
September-December; January – April; CAD$2,250
May – August: CAD$3,075
