The University Teaching Practicum
Program Description
The University Teaching Practicum is a self-directed program of professional development in university teaching and learning for graduate students. Candidates register for the Practicum with the CST and gain recognition from the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies for (1) attending selected teaching and learning workshops; (2) engaging in a systematic program of teaching development, and (3) preparing a teaching dossier.
The Practicum was developed collaboratively by the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) and the Centre for the Support of Teaching and has been in operation since 1994.

How to Register
Participants in the University Teaching Practicum can now register online. Once you've registered, your name will be added to our mailing list. You will begin to receive our newsletter within a few weeks of registration.
Practicum Completion Requirements
In order to complete the UTP, you must fulfil specific requirements as summarized in the University Teaching Practicum Checklist, also available as Appendix F of the UTP Guide. Completion requirements include:
- Twenty-five hours of study exploring general principles of pedagogy, at least five of them discipline-specific
- Teaching practice through employment as a TA
- Teaching self-analysis through peer feedback and Micro-Teaching
- Teaching analysis through student evaluations, and
- Preparation of a Teaching Dossier that provides a comprehensive account of your approach to teaching, while illustrating the means by which you fulfilled the above Practicum requirements.
