Technical Support Groups
Centre for the Support of Teaching (CST)
1050 TEL – 88 Pond Road • 416 736-5754 • cst@yorku.ca
http://www.yorku.ca/cst/
Academic Director: Ros Woodhouse
CST offers consultation on issues related to teaching with technology. When you are unsure where to start, CST can help to connect you with the appropriate support group for your needs.
CST and the Faculty of Arts jointly offer Arts do TEL, a faculty development course for instructors wishing to transform an existing face-to-face course to a "blended" model, taking advantage of the learning and accessibility possibilities afforded by the web. Get more information from http://www.arts.yorku.ca/research_and_teaching/dotel/
CST also chairs the Technology-Enhanced Learning Coordinating Committee (TELCC), which endeavours to coordinate the technology support activities of the various groups on campus, and to emphasize the primacy of teaching in this work. CST and TELCC jointly sponsor the annual TEL@York conference of ideas and exchange about teaching and learning using technology: http://www.yorku.ca/cst/faculty/telconf.html

CIO & Executive Director: Bob Gagne
Director, information Systems: Peter Rowley
CNS is a very large organization that manages all aspects of central computing services at York, including telecommunications, network infrastructure, and central computer accounts (e.g., email and web sites). You are most likely to meet staff from these units:
-
Client Services and The Helpdesk
101 WSC – 155 Campus Walk • 416 736-5800 • helpdesk@yorku.ca
http://www.yorku.ca/computing/facultystaff/Contactus/
Manager: Karen ReynoldsCNS Client Services offers technical support for York faculty, students and staff. The Helpdesk drop-in counter, located at the Computing Commons (101 William Small Centre), is staffed by and targeted mainly for students. Satellite labs are located in the TEL Building and Accolade East. Most faculty members request support by telephone or email.
-
Learning Technology Services (LTS)
1050 TEL – 88 Pond Road • 416 736-5800 • faculty@yorku.ca
http://www.yorku.ca/fsc
Manager: Rob FinlaysonFSC provides consultation and assistance to York faculty members who are interested in using technology to support, supplement or enhance their teaching and research activities. Throughout the year LTS offers workshops on topics ranging from electronic gradebooks to PowerPoint presentations, web site creation, working with multimedia, and the Moodle and WebCT course management systems. They are also happy to offer technical support and advice for your ongoing projects. Make use of the wide variety of software and hardware in their drop-in lab to create course materials, or just to learn more about the possibilities.
- Instructional Technology Centre (ITC)
110 Central Square • 416 736-5065 • itc@yorku.ca
http://www.yorku.ca/computing/facultystaff/teach_learn/itc/
Manager: John BriggsITC provides technology and media support services for courses and special events. Their services include the delivery and set-up of audio-visual and computer equipment in classrooms at the York campus; in general, your departmental administrative assistant should place classroom equipment orders on your behalf. ITC also offers audio and video conferencing facilities and maintenance and repair of audio-visual equipment. Some of ITC's services are charged back to departments or to individual users.
York University Libraries (YUL)
416 736-5150 • library@yorku.ca
http://www.library.yorku.ca/
The Libraries offer consultation and workshops for faculty and students and provide assistance in structuring library assignments. Since many scholarly resources are now available online, the Library is a critical resource in many TEL activities.
Institute for Research on Learning Technologies (IRLT)
1029 TEL – 88 Pond Road • 416 736-5019
http://www.yorku.ca/irlt/
IRLT encourages the formation of links with faculty members across the university and with schools, government, and industry to provide collaborative, multidisciplinary approaches to research problems and issues. It has a broad mandate to engage in systematic inquiry, discussion, and information sharing related to the pedagogical uses of technology at all levels.
Local Technical Support Groups
While the services provided by CST and CNS are available to all faculty members, they do not cover all of your potential computing needs. Most Faculties also have a technology group to provide specific services for your area, such as support for the desktop computer in your office and access to the local area network server where you can store your files, or to the Faculty intranet.
Up-to-date links for local support groups can always be found at the York University Computing website: www.yorku.ca/computing/facultystaff/Arts Academic Technology Services (ATS)

Local vs Central: Who Does What?
The services provided by local computer support vary from Faculty to Faculty, and may include:
- installing and configuring hardware and software for your office computer
- computer accounts for your local area, such as access to the Faculty server or intranet
- technical support for hardware, software, and local computer account problems
- computer labs for teaching
- support for special software that is used primarily within your Faculty
- help with creating course web pages
- help with planning your computer purchases
- technical training and workshops
Services that you would normally request centrally from CNS include:
- activating central computer accounts, including York email and web page accounts
- technical support for York email and other central computer accounts
How do you know who to ask for help? A good strategy is to get to know the computer support personnel in your local area, and let them advise you about what services they can provide.
In some cases, your local computer support staff may work on your behalf to arrange centrally-supported services, such as installing a network drop in your office.
