CUPE 3903 Unit 2 Teaching Development Grants

Deadline for applications: EXTENDED TO March 1, 2010

Each year, Contract Faculty are eligible to apply for grants through the CUPE 3903 Unit 2 Teaching Development Fund. The fund is intended to assist "contract faculty to develop a new program of study, new courses and teaching materials, and/or their teaching skills." Based on criteria specified in Article 15.18 of the Unit 2 Collective Agreement, each year the following grants are allocated:

  • Two Major grants each in the amount of one full Course Directorship
  • Five Minor grants in the amount of $2,500 each

University Wide Teaching Awards (York University)

The University Wide Teaching Awards honour those who, through innovation and commitment, have significantly enhanced the quality of learning by York students. Four awards are offered each year: Full-time faculty with ten or more years' teaching experience; full-time faculty with less than ten year's experience; contract and adjunct faculty and TAs.

YUFA Teaching-Learning Development Grants

Deadline for applications: November 15, 2009

Awards from the Teaching-Learning Development Fund will support projects which have the potential to make significant curricular or methodological contributions to teaching and learning at York, or which enable faculty to enhance their own teaching skills.  Awards of up to $2,500 are available to individuals, or up to $5,000 for group projects.  All members of the YUFA bargaining unit are eligible to apply, except members of the Joint Committee on Teaching - Learning Development Grants.

YUFA Release-Time Teaching Fellowships

Deadline for applications: November 15, 2009

Release-Time Teaching Fellowships are intended to provide recipients with the opportunity to develop innovative teaching and learning projects or to enhance their own teaching skills (as opposed to disciplinary competence), when such development or enhancement could not take place in the context of a full teaching load.   This program is available to all members of the YUFA bargaining unit and is adjudicated by the Joint Committee on Release - time Teaching Fellowships. Individuals may apply for a reduction of up to half their normal course load, and Faculties will be reimbursed for release time at part-time rates, with the understanding that the funds provided will be made available to the applicant's home unit.

The Alan Blizzard Award

The Alan Blizzard Award for Collaborative Projects that Improve Student Learning is designed to stimulate and reward collaboration in teaching, and encourage and disseminate scholarship of teaching in post secondary education.

OCUFA Awards for Teaching and Academic Librarians

Each year, the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) recognizes outstanding teachers and academic librarians in Ontario universities through awards. Approximately seven awards are presented.

Sloan-C Excellence in Online Teaching and Learning Awards

The Awards Selection Committee of the Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C) invites nominations for the Sloan-C 2005 Awards for outstanding contributions to the field of online learning.

3M Teaching Fellowship Program

3M Teaching Fellowships honour exceptional contributions to teaching and learning at Canadian universities. Up to ten awards are presented each year to recognize teaching excellence as well as educational leadership, and are sponsored by 3M Canada, in collaboration with the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.

Provincial Teaching Awards

Leadership in Faculty Teaching Award

The Leadership in Faculty Teaching Award was developed to recognize and encourage teaching excellence at Ontario's colleges and universities. Up to 100 awards will be given to faculty who influence, motivate and inspire students and demonstrate leadership in teaching methods for the diverse student body in Ontario. Winners will receive $20,000 over two years to encourage continued excellence in the classroom setting.

York Teaching Awards

Faculty of Arts Dean's Award for Outstanding Teaching 2008-2009

The Dean invites nominations for the Dean's Award for Outstanding Teaching, 2008-2009. Up to three winners, one of whom must be a pre-tenure full-time faculty member, will be selected by the Faculty of Arts Nominations Committee. Each Department/Division is encouraged to nominate one tenure-stream faculty member who has not yet been granted tenure, and one additional full-time faculty member (from among CLA's, Contract Faculty and tenured faculty). Since nominations are open, individuals (both faculty and students) may also nominate candidates. The deadline for the submission of nomination packages is March 15, 2009.

Faculty of Graduate Studies' Teaching Award (York University)

York's Faculty of Graduate Studies Teaching Award is bestowed annually on a faculty member who has displayed sustained excellence and enthusiasm in teaching at the graduate level.

The award recognizes teaching and supervisory excellence. Other elements taken into consideration include scholarly, professional or teaching development, initiatives in the graduate program, and curriculum development. The nominator may be any member of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, including faculty, graduate students or staff.

Nominations must reach the FGS Council Office (283 York Lanes) by November 14, 2008.

Faculty of Science and Engineering Excellence in Teaching Awards

The Faculty of Science and Engineering Excellence in Teaching Awards recognize and celebrate faculty members and graduate students who have made an outstanding contribution to teaching and learning within the Faculty. The awards honour the commitment, professionalism and talent that these scientists bring to their role as educators. Nominations are accepted within the following categories: Senior tenure-stream faculty; Junior tenure-stream faculty; Non-tenure stream faculty; Graduate Students

Faculty of Science and Engineering Innovation in Teaching Award

The Faculty of Science and Engineering Innovation in Teaching Award recognizes and honours a team of one or more faculty members, graduate students, and / or staff (e.g. technicians) who have made an outstanding innovation in teaching within the Faculty. The recipient[s] should have implemented an innovative approach to teaching a course, lecture, laboratory or tutorial, or in other areas of curriculum development such as program design. Criteria for this award include demonstrated novelty, efficacy and/or impact of the innovation(s) on science courses/programs described in the nomination letter.

Honorific Professorships at York University

These prestigious awards are conferred upon long-serving tenured faculty members who have made extraordinary contributions to the University as colleagues, teachers and scholars. The general criteria is established by the Senate. Nominations must be made by tenured faculty members and submitted to the University Secretariat.

Osgoode Teaching Awards

The Osgoode Hall Law School Teaching Awards are presented to honour those who, through innovation and commitment, have significantly enhanced the quality of learning by Osgoode LLB students. Three Teaching Awards will be presented annually, one in each of the following categories: Full-Time Senior Faculty; Full-Time Faculty; Adjunct Faculty.

Nominations must be submitted by no later than May 15th of each year to the Executive Assistant to the Dean, using the Nomination Form available from the Office of the Dean.
