Classroom Research Strategies

Classroom Research

Classroom research is ongoing and cumulative scholarly inquiry by instructors into the nature of teaching and learning in their own classrooms. It involves "observing students in the act of learning, reflecting and discussing observations and data with teaching colleagues, and reading the literature on what is already known about learning" (Cross, K. P. and Harris Steadman, M. Classroom Research. San Francisco, CA: Jossey-Bass, 1996).

Classroom Assessment

Classroom assessment is one such method of inquiry involving the use of techniques and instruments to obtain ongoing feedback about the link between what is being taught and the level and quality of student learning. Unlike tests and quizzes, classroom assessment can be used in a timely way to help instructors identify gaps between what they are teaching and what students are learning and enable them to adjust their teaching to make it more efficient and effective. The information should always be shared with students to help them improve their own learning strategies and become more successful learners.
