Straightforward strategies to get your students talking online

Ros Woodhouse (Educational Developer, CST / LA&PS, Writing Department)

  • Date: Tuesday, October 11, 2011
  • Time: 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
  • Location: 1014 TEL

Getting students to participate in a discussion can be challenging at the best of times, and moving discussions online brings some new challenges in addition to some of the old ones we’ve all met in the classroom. This workshop will help you to facilitate effective online discussions by anticipating and overcoming potential challenges which are specific to online environments, as well as some of those which may arise in any environment. You will learn how to use strategies for setting expectations, setting up groups and facilitating discussions, dealing with problems, and assessing students’ contributions.

Please bring your laptop with you, or email cst@yorku.ca to request that we book a laptop from Learning Technologies Services on your behalf.

Please note: A Learning Technologies Services staff person, Helen Brennagh , will be available the hour following the end of each of these sessions to field any technical questions you may have.
