Always Teaching

Dr. Dalton Kehoe has been a teacher, trainer, public speaker and organizational development practitioner for over forty years. He came to York in 1967 and became the first faculty member hired by the Social Science Division. With a love of teaching, and degrees in three different knowledge areas (BA, Business, MA, Sociology, Phd., Psychology), he was perfectly positioned for a career teaching interdisciplinary courses built around powerful themes. He retired 41 years later as Senior Scholar of Communication Studies. (See his CV for details).

For the first 16 years of his work in the Social Science Division he directed or taught in an extraordinary range of courses –from “The Black Experience” – to “Music And Society” - to the largest course in the Division’s first decade, “The Corporation and Canadian Society.” He was also the coordinator of the Urban Studies programme and cross-appointed to the graduate Faculty of Environmental Studies. He taught courses for both units.

In the early 90’s he joined the Communication Studies Programme in the Division and developed the “Interpersonal and Organizational Communication” stream, creating second, third and fourth year courses. These courses, as well as seminars on leadership communication, developed and presented for the Executive Education Centre of the Schulich School of Business, became the focus of his teaching for the latter 20 years of his career at York. Post retirement, he continues to publish textbooks for his interpersonal and organizational communication courses which he teaches online in a media-rich blended learning format.

A year after he retired, he became only the second Canadian academic to be invited by the Great Courses Company of Chantilly, Virginia to create and deliver a course - a lecture series called Effective Communication Skills. It was successfully released in a variety of formats in 2011 and continues to be a top seller, with mentions in a wide variety of publications including The New York Times, The Economist and Psychology Today.

He has recently published a new book for managers called Mindful Management: The Neuroscience of Trust and Effective Workplace Leadership and he continues to work as a successful public speaker across North America - known for his thought-provoking, dynamic and entertaining presentations on revitalizing organizational and personal relationships.

Always Learning

Always an early adopter of technology to improve classroom communication, he consistently researched its effects on learning. In 2002, he became the first academic in North America to use Mediasite Live streaming technology to create asynchronous access to his lectures. In 2003, he began to teach on line using a blended learning format. His research on student responses to all aspects of his courses led to improvements in the structure of course web sites (including assignment delivery and submission systems); in how the video streams were presented; and finally to significant changes in the way he taught. His other research interest emerged out of his work as an organizational development consultant. While he was senior partner of the firm Heart of the Matter Consulting, it carried out a number of studies on the effects of key organizational factors on the engagement of employees in their work for several large organizations.

Recognition for His Work

His teaching has been recognized by his peers at the departmental, university and provincial levels, by his students in annual course evaluations and on ratemyprofessor.com, and by the general public through TVO - on their “best lecturers in the province” list. He was also a highly rated seminar leader for the Schulich School of Business and has received national recognition for his research on the effects of learning technology on teaching in both the US and Canada and for his articles on effective teaching in the UK.
