QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT MUSCULOSKELETAL DISORDERS

Revised July 30, 2003

Some doctors are not musculoskeletal specialists. Try to find out how much experience he/she has had with problems similar to yours. For example, you could ask:
"Do you see many cases like mine?"

If your doctor has not seen many cases like yours, you may wish to ask:
"Do you think I should see a specialist?"

Here are some other questions extracted from Washington State's Ergonomic Program Guideline.
1) What is your diagnosis of my condition? Can you explain in non-medical language what that means?
2) What kinds of potential complications should I be aware of and watch for?
3) What are my treatment options? What are the pros and cons of each?
4) If unsuccessful, when should we consider alternative treatment?
5) What, if any, are the long-term implications of this injury/illness?
6) What precautions should I take to avoid further injury?
