MEIJI UNIVERSITY, TOKYO

The University
Meiji University was founded in 1881 as the Meiji Law School. In 1903 the institution was granted official status as a private institution, and its name was changed to Meiji University. As a result, the university's academic and physical growth accelerated. Today, the university is a member of the "Tokyo Big Six", the six most prestigious institutions in the Tokyo metropolitan area. Its distinctive campuses attract approximately 85,000 applicants each year for the some 7,000 places in the freshmen class of the seven schools in undergraduate and graduate courses and the Women's College.

At present, Meiji University consists of seven four-year colleges with related graduate courses in the Graduate School. The seven are: the School of Law, the School of Commerce, the School of Political Science and Economics, the School of Arts and Letters, the School of Science and Technology, the School of Agriculture, and the School of Business Administration. A Meiji University calendar containing specific course offerings within these departments can be consulted at York International.

Undergraduate enrolment for Meiji University is made up of 26,471 daytime students and 6,060 evening students. Faculty consists of 649, full-time; 1,217, part-time; administrative staff: 582, full-time; 162, part-time.

The university has produced outstanding scholars in all areas, but is especially proud of its accomplishments in the field of law and politics. The university's interest in attaining excellence in all areas also applies to sports, and Meiji athletes regularly compete in international sporting events and have won eleven gold medals at the Olympic Games.

Academic Year
The university offers daytime and evening classes on a two-semester system. The academic year is from April to March; first semester runs early April to July; second semester from September to February.

Language
Instruction is in Japanese and candidates are required to complete a Japanese proficiency test in order to be considered for the exchange. Students who pass the entrance examination and are admitted are required to continue their study of the Japanese language in order to raise their level of proficiency.

Accommodation
Meiji University has no dormitory for international students, so you need to stay in an apartment or a rental room. The staff of the Centre for International Programs (CIP) will assist students in locating a accommodation. However, as is often the case in Japan, the final decision on the housing contract must be reached by a landlord and a lessee.

Tuition and Fees (based on 1995-96 figures)
York students must register at York while they are studying at Meiji University. Students will be required to pay York tuition fees. There may some tuition scholarships awarded, this is determined annually. Students are responsible for student activities fees, living and travel expenses while in Japan. At Meiji, Information Science Centre fees (computer use fees) and audio visual aid use fees are to be paid when you use equipment in the centre; and you are required to join the Student Health Insurance Program, of which the fee is 2,500 YEN (See following section on Health Insurance). The Ministry of Education, Japan offers scholarships for graduate and undergraduate exchange students in Japan. The successful York applicant(s) will be nominated by the York/Meiji Selection committee for consideration. The scholarship includes a monthly stipend, the cost of preparation for the exchange and round-trip airfare.

Personal Expenses (based on 1995-96 figures)
Your personal budget highly depends on the expenses of your housing and board. Students of Meiji University who live alone in an apartment house spend, on average, 110,000-120,000 YEN ($1,438-$1,568Cdn.) a month for living expenses. This includes apartment rental fees, meals, commuting, books, leisure, etc. Please make your budget reflect the above mentioned amount of money.

Commuting Expenses
It is quite difficult for students to live within walking distance of Surugadai Campus, as the campus is located near the centre of business and the government office centre and there are few apartment houses in this area. In the Tokyo area, it commonly takes commuters about an hour to reach their office or school by train, subway or bus. Commuting expenses indeed depends on the distance from the student's home to their campus. We estimate the average expense for students living in Tokyo at 5,000 YEN ($65 CAN) per month.

While OHIP minimal coverage is continued to some extent overseas, it is also very important to get comprehensive insurance such as Blue Cross. If you are planning on staying overseas for more than six months, you must notify OHIP at 416 482-1111 for further information. The Meiji Student Health Program fee is 2,500 YEN ($32 Cdn.) per year. However, students must undergo medical treatment at the specific clinics or hospitals under contract with Meiji University. International students can receive financial assistance without charge for medical care by the Association of International Education Japan (AIEJ) which is a foundation assisting international students under advice and support of the Ministry of Education.Further it is recommended that international students also join the National Health Insurance Program for which the fee is approximately 12,000 YEN ($156 Cdn.) per year.
