Holdings

In all, holdings now total more than 40,000 records, including volumes in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. There is also a collection of periodicals, maps, microfilms, videos and slides which supplements the collection in the university library system.

Other acquisitions were made possible by generous donations from the Asia Pacific Foundation, the Japan Foundation, the People's Republic of China, the Korea Foundation, the Republic of China, Faculty of Education, Founders Student Council and by individual donations by faculty, alumni and students.

At this time, the collection is non-circulating. Efforts are currently underway to catalogue the collection.

Donations

The Need

Although the JCRCEAS receives support from the university, the Resource Centre relies primarily on the Ontario Work Study Plan to meet minimum staffing and operational costs. The Work Study Plan fall under the umbrella of the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) which provides part-time employment opportunities to full-time students in order to meet part of their educational costs.

The cost for each position is shared by the provincial government and East Asian Studies on a proportional basis each academic year. As a result our income/support is often tenuous while our costs increase. So we rely on our supporters to donate books, periodicals, and other materials, and to support us financially.

Our Goal

As a service institution, the largest part of our budget goes towards staffing needs in order to keep our Resource Centre accessible during the academic year. Besides accessibility, the Resource Centre must continue to expand to remain useful to users. We should be taking out subscriptions to new periodicals, maintaining current subscriptions and purchasing new titles. Over the past few years, we have had to discontinue our subscriptions and purchases and rely solely on donations.

We Appreciate Your Support

We can give tax receipts for donations in cash or kind to the Jerome Ch'en Resource Centre for East Asian Studies. Donated materials that the library cannot use (for example, books or journal of which we already have multiple copies) is forwarded, if the donor agrees, to other libraries with which we have contact with. Regretfully, we cannot supply tax receipts for materials we do not keep.

We have on several occasions been given collections of books or materials from institutions that no longer wanted them or are able to keep them. All of these are recognized by tax receipts.

For information, please contact EASP office at 416-736-2100, ext. 33223 or email at easp@yorku.ca.
