York University Environmental Test Site (YES)

York Environmental Site (YES)

Department of Earth and Space Science and Engineering

York University, North York, Ontario

The York Environmental Test Site (YES) consists of a set of buried targets. The site is located in the southwestern sector of York University's Keele-Steeles campus, marked by "Y.E.S" on the map below.

The YES project was initiated in the Fall of 1995 following more than two years of preliminary planning. The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Science at York consulted with local industries, York University authorities, Ontario Ministry of Environment and Energy, and colleagues from other institutions involved with establishing similar facilities. The site itself was established in 1996. The primary purpose of the site is to enable training and research in usage of state-of-the-art geophysical instruments to accurately locate the buried targets. Typical targets include ore samples buried in various orientations and size and drums filled with sand. All of the buried targets have no surface expression that suggest their presence. The surface area is shared with York's School of Physical Education for use as a football/soccer field.
