Submission Guidelines

Existere publishes bi-annually. We are currently accepting submissions for the Spring/Summer 2010 issue.

Submission deadline is 23:59, December 31, 2009.

The Fall 2009/Winter 2010 issue is now available.

It is strongly suggest you read a copy to see the kinds and quality of writing we publish.

Text Submission Guidelines:

A brief letter of introduction, including name, e-mail address, mailing address, and a three or four line biographical statement about the author/poet/artist, must accompany all submissions.

DO NOT send us original manuscripts or artwork as we cannot be accountable for lost submissions. Prose submissions should not exceed 3500 words; a maximum of 2 pieces of prose, 5 postcard stories, 5 poems, and/or 6 graphic/photos/etc will be considered or published from any submitter during one calendar year.

We encourage that any submission exceeding two pages should be sent by email as an attachment and should come in rtf, txt, doc, PDF, or wpd format. For poetry that requires special formatting attention beyond left-justification, it is strongly encouraged that you send it as a PDF for review.

An adequately sized self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) must accompany postal submissions in order for them to be returned. No SASE means works not accepted will be destroyed. Hard copy visual works must be able to be scanned in a standard-sized scanner.

All genres and forms are welcome, including poetry, short plays, short stories, postcard and flash fiction, arts & literature reviews, critical essays, interviews, sketches, photos, etc.

We are currently going through our backlist and apologize for the delay (the academic year was extended by strike and everything is backlogged until June 2nd after which we will be resuming our reviewing process in earnest. Normal response time for new submissons is usually two weeks for an acknowledgement of receipt and about one to three months for a decision on your submission - and only via email (unless you provide a SASE for that purpose, so please provide an e-mail address in your hard copy bio). We'll try to be quicker in future as we develop our new processes.

Existere now pays a small honourarium to writers & artists upon publication. The exact rates vary by length of submission, but will include two copies (minimum).

We do not accept previously published work except by special arrangement and request of Existere. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but MUST be so noted. If your simultaneous submission is accepted elsewhere before we secure the right, you are required to inform us immediately so we can remove your submission from consideration.

Once we have accepted your piece for publication or reserved it for second review (the longlist), we reserve the right of first publication until we print it, post it, hold it for next issue, or repatriate it back to the contributor. In any case, status will be communicated via e-mail promptly. If you have not heard from us after 90 days after submission, please enquire. Sometimes emails get caught in spam filters.

Copyright remains with the author(s) and artist(s), who are free to resell it after six months after publication (noting Existere as first publisher), unless granted an earlier release by the journal. Existere retains the right to reprint, to publish in electonic editions, and to include them in any anthology without further compensation.

Existere is affiliated with Vanier College, York University and is funded by Vanier College Council (since 1978).

The journal is staffed by an all-volunteer crew, mostly undergraduates, graduates, a few post-grads, as well as staff and academics and mostly from (but not limited to) programs in English, Creative Writing, and Professional Writing - all having a passion for literature and the arts. Many of the editorial crew are themselves published poets, writers, and artists. All are keen to learn and gain valuable experience to help their studies and further their careers.

Existere is always happy to receive books for review. Please note that books to be considered for any forthcoming issue should arrive at our office no later than two months before the deadline noted at the top of this page in order for us to have time to give it a look and write a review (if it is so selected). The current issue has reviews for Looking for Lucy (2008, Leaf Press) and Women Between: Construction of Self in the Work of Sharon Butala, Aganetha Dyck, Mary Meigs and Mary Pratt (2008, University of Calgary Press).
