Terms/Acronyms

HTML

HTML is an acronym for HyperText Markup Language

It is the language used for designing/creating WWW pages

Put simply, it is a set of commands (called tags) that are used to format text, images and other media as well as providing HyperText links. (for example here is a link to WWW sites in Chile)

Formatting tags are used to change the appearance of text. For example to make text bold you must surround the word or phrase as follows:

<B>bold</B>

The tags section gives many details.

URL

URL is an acronym for Uniform Resource Locator.

Location is technically referred to as a URL. Essentially a URL is a way of specifying where a file is on the internet and what kind of file it is. A web page has a URL of the form: http://www.someplace.somewhere/aDirectory/aFile.html. There are many others.

HTTP

HTTP is an acronym for HyperText Transfer Protocol. Using http:// in front of a file specification identifies to the browser what scheme it is to use to access and process the file.

Valid for Fall/Winter 2003-2004
