What Do I learn in the Beginner Sessions

During each lesson, there is a warm up with stretching and then the class is split into two groups. Each group will spend half of the hour practicing footwork and foil blade work techniques.
Beginners will learn the on guard position, stepping, lunges with recovery, and keeping distance with footwork. In the blade work portion, beginners will learn how to hold a foil, simple direct attacks, parry 4 and 6, and single disengages. Beginners will practice against dummies and also have a chance to spar against their classmates in the later lessons.

What Experince do I need?

No previous experience is necessary. Fencing is a sport that is both recreational and competitive. Open to all students, faculty and staff of all ages.

What Equipment will I need?

We recommend indoor court shoes, T-shirt, sweatpants. Shorts or skirts are acceptable during first practice, but sweatpants are advised for all members and beginners. All fencing equipment is provided for beginners. However, if you plan to actively compete, it is required that you purchase your own equipment.
