C9. UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM & ADMISSIONS SUBCOMMITTEE

C9.1 SUBCOMMITTEE DELIBERATIONS

March 2, 1995

The Undergraduate Program and Admissions Subcommittee may include for its deliberations such additional faculty members as it considers necessary.

C9.2 BES ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

March 2, 1995

(a) To be considered for admission to the BES program in Environmental Studies, the applicant normally must have: six O.A.C./Grade 13 credits, of which one must be in English; an average of 70% or better; and credits in mathematics and biology being recommended.

(b) English is the language of instruction of the Faculty. Students whose first language is not English must provide evidence of competence in English to the satisfaction of the Undergraduate Program and Admissions Subcommittee, as follows:

  1. At the time of application for admission, an applicant who is not a Canadian Citizen or a Landed Immigrant in Canada must provide results of the Michigan English Language Test (MELT) or of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the results of such other language assessment as may be approved by the Undergraduate Program and Admissions Subcommittee for the particular applicant. Applicants whose first language is English may be exempted from this requirement by the Undergraduate Program and Admissions Subcommittee.
  2. The Undergraduate Program and Admissions Subcommittee shall determine whether further instruction in English and further evidence of competence in English is needed by an applicant who is otherwise admissible.

(c) An application for admission to the BES program consists of material as required by the Registrar's Office for undergraduate admission plus a supplementary application form.

C9.3 BES ADMISSION PROCEDURES

March 2, 1995

(a) Decision on admission to the BES degree program is made by the Undergraduate Program Director.

(b) The Undergraduate Program Director acts on the advice of the Undergraduate Program and Admissions Subcommittee.

(c) When all required admissions information has been received, each file is reviewed by members of the subcommittee and discussed at a formal meeting of the subcommittee. The subcommittee may provide advice to the Undergraduate Program Director at that point or require that further information be provided by the applicant.

(d) Applicants are notified in writing by the Registrar's Office of the results following the decision of the Undergraduate Program Director.

(e) The subcommittee uses the following admissions criteria:

  1. intellectual capacity (e.g., grades)
  2. learning potential (e.g., supplementary application form, successful completion of test of language skills)
  3. appropriateness to FES of intended study program (e.g., supplementary application form).

(f) Application of the criteria: the intellectual capacity criterion is the first "gate." A "yes" moves the application forward for consideration of the other two criteria.

C9.4 BES PROGRAM ACTIONS

March 2, 1995

(a) The Undergraduate Program and Admissions Subcommittee shall consider and make decisions on proposed actions on BES Program Plans and on petitions concerning individual BES student programs, on behalf of the Committee of Instruction.

(b) All decisions of the subcommittee related to BES Program Plans and on petitions shall be subject to confirmation by the Committee of Instruction. The Committee of Instruction may refer any decision back to the subcommittee for further consideration.

(c) Upon the written request of the student involved or of any faculty member, the decision of the subcommittee regarding a petition or a proposed action on a BES Program Plan will be set aside and the matter referred for a substitute decision by the Committee of Instruction.

(d) Where a matter is referred by a student or faculty member for substitute decision by the Committee of Instruction, the Committee of Instruction may refer the matter to the subcommittee for further information and recommendation, but not for decision.

(e) The subcommittee may refer any matter to the Committee of Instruction for discussion or decision or for both.

(f) Decisions of the subcommittee will be made by consensus of the voting members.

(g) After each of its meetings, the subcommittee shall present a report to the Committee of Instruction.
