To maintain your status at the University, each term you must complete two different steps: registration and enrolment. Both steps are completed online and since they are combined into one online system, you may not notice the difference. However, the two steps are separate and are important in different ways.
To complete these steps you must log in to York’s Registration and Enrolment module using Passport York.
Step 1: Registration at the University
When you log into the Registration and Enrolment module for the first time each term you will be asked to confirm your status at the University, agree to abide by University policies and accept your fees. This simple step is registration. It is a brief process that only involves making two or three selections on the web form and takes just couple minutes. However, it forms a binding contract between you and the University.
If you do not register online each term before the deadline, you will be charged a $200 late fee. The registration deadlines are: Fall term – September 15; Winter term – January 15; and Summer term – May 15. The deadlines for course enrolment fall before these dates – please see below.
Step 2: Enrolment in courses
Enrolment is what you do to sign up for specific courses. After you have registered you will come to your course information screen. To enroll in (add) a course, you need to know its catalog number, which you lookup using the York courses website. To de-enroll from (i.e. drop) a course, follow the instructions.
Important notice for new MES students:
When you register/enroll online in August, as per the instructions you will receive please enroll only in ENVS 5100 – the other courses you are taking will be determined when you meet with your Advisor in the beginning of September.Course enrolment deadlines
Each term has deadlines for adding and dropping courses, after which you will not be able to make changes online. The deadlines for adding/dropping courses are:Fall term – September 5
Winter term – December 19
Summer term – April 30Important note: the deadline to add/drop courses online is BEFORE the registration deadline in order to help you avoid paying the late registration fee.
Under certain circumstances you may still be able to petition to add or drop courses after these deadlines, but this is not guaranteed. For assistance and information, please contact OSAS.
Continuous registration
As a York graduate student you must maintain continuous registration until you have completed your program of study. In other words you must register and pay fees for every term – fall, winter and summer – from the start of your degree until it is finished.
Under certain circumstances you can petition for permission to not register/pay fees in a specific term. For details please see Section 16 of the Faculty of Graduate Studies regulations located in the Faculty of Graduate Studies Calendar.
