About Fine Arts Cultural Studies At York University
Please note that this program is pending closure and no longer accepting applications. Why not look into York's other Fine Arts programs?
York University's Fine Arts Cultural Studies program offers a comprehensive, integrated approach to fine arts education that reflects current interdisciplinary and cross-cultural developments in the field.
Integral to the program is the consideration of artistic issues, ideas and trends in a variety of contexts and settings: traditional and contemporary, mainstream and alternative, local and transnational. The study of the relationship between the arts and the new technologies, including theoretical and practical work in digital applications in fine arts, is a key component.
Situated in Ontario's only Faculty of Fine Arts, which also houses degree programs in Dance, Design, Film, Music, Theatre and Visual Arts, the Fine Arts Cultural Studies program draws on the resources and expertise in all of these areas. The curriculum is built around a core of interdisciplinary courses which explore the interrelation of the arts and the environments in which they exist. Students then design their own course of study in accordance with their interests and career goals. They may choose to take a wide range of courses, or to pursue a specialization in streams of study such as world cultures, art and technology, arts management, or arts and education.
Special features of the Fine Arts Cultural Studies program include courses in interactive multimedia and internship placements in the arts industries for upper-level students.
With its strong interdisciplinary base, Fine Arts Cultural Studies provides a solid foundation for a wide variety of careers in the arts, including education, arts media, arts criticism and history, arts therapy, and arts administration.
A new Specialized Honours BA Program in Digital Media was launched in fall 2008. This innovative interdisciplinary degree links Fine Arts Cultural Studies, Computer Science, and Communications Studies to provide students with a comprehensive education in digital art, culture and technology.
