Professor De Shane performed internationally with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Les Feux Follets and several other professional performance ensembles before pursuing her scholarly interests in dance, anthropology and ethnomusicology.

She is considered an expert on the dances of Canada's First Nations and various forms of multi-ethnic dance, and is frequently sought as a cultural policy consultant on issues of equity and access. For more than two decades,  she has been actively involved in the organization and promotion of cultural and scholarly performance and multimedia exchanges with Latin America, the Caribbean and East Asia.

Her current research focus is the traditional Trinidadian Carnival.
