Criteria:

Open to an undergraduate student in the Faculty of Fine Arts majoring in theatre, music, film or dance.
Minimum GPA of 7.5 (B+)
Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person; resident of Ontario
Must demonstrate financial need
Preference will be given to applicants who have demonstrated leadership abilities or have a proven track record of community service.

J.P. Bickell Foundation Awards

Faculty of Fine Arts Opportunity Award

Harry Rowe Bursary I - OSOTF

Criteria:

Fine Arts majors enrolled in full-time or part-time studies in any FFA department or program, at any year level
Must demonstrate achievement or potential in artistic or scholarly work
Priority consideration will be given to the needs of students with disabilities and students from groups that have been historically disadvantaged because of race, color, ancestry and/or ethnic origin. (Applicants are encouraged to self-identify on application)
Must demonstrate acute financial need, to the point where continuation of studies is in jeopardy

Imasco Performing Arts Awards
Value of Award: 21 at $2,875

Criteria:

Full-time Fine Arts undergraduate students majoring in performance studies in any of the fine arts disciplines
Enrolled in 2nd or 3rd year at the time of application, and returning to continue full-time studies in the Faculty of Fine Arts in the following fall semester
Must demonstrate outstanding ability and achievement in one or more of the performing arts, as demonstrated through their work in the studio and in public performance
Must demonstrate sound academic standing

Given to a Year 3 or 4 student in each department within the Faculty of Fine Arts, in recognition of creative and/or scholarly achievement

Fine Arts Bursary

Awarded to deserving fine arts students demonstrating financial need.

CASA Fine Arts Student Award
Value of Award: 1 at $550
Application Process: A Student Financial Profile is not required to be eligible for this award. Applicant must submit a profile demonstrating the following:
Criteria:

a strong record of involvement in, and positive contribution to, student government or departmental, Faculty or York University activities, while maintaining satisfactory progress in his/her studies.
Recipients must be Canadian citizens/permanent residents or protected persons, residents of Ontario and demonstrate financial need.

Michael Plexman Award for Creative Innovation
Value of Bursary: 4 at $1000
Application Process: A Student Financial Profile is required to be eligible for this award.
Criteria:

Applicants must be a 3rd or 4th year FFA student
Must demonstrate innovation in creative work in visual arts, design, new media or interactive multimedia.
Recipients must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons

Dance Scholars Award
Value of Award: 2 at $400

Open to 4th year undergraduate or graduate students who have completed course work and are writing a thesis

Dance Department Fund

Spedding Memorial Award in Dance

Grant Strate Award in Dance

Chair of Design Scholarship
Value of Scholarship: 1 at $1,250

Criteria:

Recognizes outstanding achievement in typography and is given to an undergraduate BDes student who has successfully completed a minimum of 84 credits.
Must have top academic performance in typography courses as indicated in the academic record of all applicants to the scholarship.

Donald Newgren Scholarship

An MDES student who has completed 21 credits.

Universal Studios Canada Film & Video Scholarship
Value of Scholarship: 2 at $1,250
Application Process: By nomination of the department only. No application is required.
Criteria:

Open to 4th-year Film majors enrolled in the Production stream
Based on outstanding achievement in production work to date and on the merit of 4th year project proposal
All 4th-year Film Production students who have submitted project proposals are automatically considered.

N.A. Taylor Prize for Film

Criteria

Helen Vari Award
Value of Award: 1 at $2,500

E.S. Rogers Film & Video Production Award
Value of Award: 2 at $1,100
Application Process: Must apply
Criteria:

Must be 4th-year production student in the Department of Film.
Award is to help offset production costs for an approved fourth-year project of outstanding merit.
Successful recipient must submit receipt for their projec costst to the Film Department.

The E. S. Rogers Film & Video Scholarship
Value of Award: 2 at $1,500
Application Process: A Student Financial Profile is not required to apply to this Scholarship
Criteria:

Awarded in recognition of academic excellence to a Year 4 production student in the Department of Film to help offset production costs for an approved fourth-year project of outstanding merit.

Lynn Sarah Torode Memorial Scholarship
Value of Scholarship: 2 at $600
Application Process: Department of Film selects recipient. No application required.
Criteria:

Given in recognition of academic/artistic excellence and promise
4th-year student specializing in cinematography or television in the Department of Film.
Preference will be given to a female student as this award commemorates Lynn Torode, the first female cinematographer at the CBC.

African Film Now/Le Cinema Africain Award
Value of Award: 2 at $1,000
Application Process: Must apply.
Criteria:

Must have a GPA of 6.0 or better
Must be enrolled in at least one African cinema course in the Departmentt of Film or researching, writing or producing films related to Africa, African heritage or the African Diaspora.

Jordon Somers Memorial Award in Film
Value of Award: $500
Application Process: Must apply. Submission of Student Financial Profile is required.
Criteria:

Open to 2nd, 3rd or 4th year film students
Must must have completed a minimum of 24 credits
Must have a minimum GPA of 7.50
Preference will be given to students in screenwriting.
Recipient must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person, and an Ontario resident.

Cinespace Studios Film & Video Production Award
Value of Award: 2 at $1,100
Application Process: A SFP is required when applying to this award
Criteria:

This award recognizes exceptional artistic merit and achievement shown by a Year 3 film and video major
Must demonstrate financial need
Will be awarded at the end of the Winter 2012 term to a 3rd year Film & Video major returning to 4th year production

Universal Studios Canada Film & Video Scholarship
Value of Award: 2 at 1,250
Application Process: Student must complete a Student Financial Profile and apply to this Scholarship. When completing the profile, please include a personal statement outlining your outstanding achievement in production work to date and on the merit of the 4th year project proposal.
Criteria:

Awarded to t 4th year film and video majors in recognition of outstanding achievement in production work to date and the merit of their fourth-year project proposals.
Scholarship used to offset production expenses of the fourth-year projects.
All 4th year production students who have submitted project proposals are automatically considered.
Successful candidates will receive their Scholarship funds upon presentation of receipts for production expenses associated with their fourth-year project.

James Beveridge Bursary
Value of Bursary: 2 at $500
Application Process: A Student Financial Profile is required when applying to this bursary.
Criteria:

Awarded to applicant with the best proposal for a documentary film for 4th year production.
Demonstrated financial need will be a stipulation.

Gajdecki Visual Effects Award
Value of Award: 1 at $1000
Application Process: Applicants must apply. This award supports production costs of the recipients fourth-year project
. Criteria:

Student must be a 4th year video major in the production stream.

Ella Fitzgerald Award for Jazz Performance

Harvey-Marsden Music Award

Preference is given to students concentrating in jazz studies

The Karabekos Award
Value of Award: 2 at $300
Application Process: No SFP required
Critieria:

Awarded to students undertaking ethnomusicological field research in non-North American based musics,
showing prowess in composition incorporating elements outside the Western Art Music tradition, or demonstrating unusual performance ability in a variety of musical styles, including the non-Western.
Academic standing is a prime consideration.
No application is required.

Marion Lower Prize in Composition
Value of Prizes: 1 at $400
Application Process: Must apply
Criteria:

Open to a music student in any year of study
Two awards are given: One for classical contemporary composition; the other for jazz composition

Olive Lower Prize in Jazz Piano
Value of Prize: 1 at $450
Application Process: No application required. Nomination by Department only. The recipient will be chosen by a panel of jazz faculty members.
Criteria:

Awarded to an outstanding jazz pianist

Oscar Peterson Bursary
Value of Bursay: 3 at $500
Application Process: Must apply. Submission of Student Financial Profile is required.
Criteria:

Open to music students who are pursuing, or intend to pursue, jazz studies
Preference will be given to students enrolled full-time
Must demonstrate financial need

Oscar Peterson Scholarships - MTCU
Value of Scholarship: 1 at $10,000
Application Process: Submission of Current Student Financial Profile. Applicants must complete the Personal Statement section outlining how they meet the criteria for this scholarship.
Criteria:

Awarded to one 4th year student in the Music degree program who demonstrates a unique musical ability, especially in the field of jazz performance, as demonstrated through live performance or a portfolio
Applicants must present a minimum sessional GPA of 7.50
Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person, and a resident of Ontario
Must demonstrates financial need.

Oscar Peterson Scholarships
Value of Scholarships: 2 at $875
Application Process: Nomination by Department or may apply through SFP Application Process
Criteria:

Outstanding music majors enrolled in FA/MUSI 3051.6.0 (Jazz Workshop III)
Maintained minimum B+ (7.0) average in jazz program with a minimum C+ (5.0) overall cumulative average

Sterling Voice Award
Value of Scholarship: 1 at $6,273 (One year's tuition)
Application Process: Must apply. Must apply. Submission of Student Financial Profile is required
Criteria:

Awarded to a student who will be entering his/her 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of full-time undergraduate study in music, specializing in vocal performance.
Intended to support aspiring singers of outstanding promise who could not otherwise afford to devote sufficient time and effort to advanced vocal and musical studies.
Covers cost of full time tuition for student.
Will be awarded in the Fall of the next academic year to selected recipient.
Must have successfully completed a minimum of 24 credits with a cumulative GPA of 6.00 (B)
Must demonstrate financial need
May apply or be nominated by a York faculty member before Spring deadline. Nominations to be delivered to Department of Music
Recipient will be expected to enroll in a minimum of 18 credits in an overall program of study that has been vetted and approved by the Director of Classical Vocal Studies.

Peggie Sampson Scholarship
Value of Scholarship: 2 at $3000 each

Criteria:

Awarded to one undergraduate student entering 2nd or 3rd year in the Dept. of Music
Awarded to student who has achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 7.50

Sterling Beckwith Award:

Criteria:

open to Year 2 and 3 music majors who demonstrate exceptional promise and ability in performance, superior musicianship and a breadth of cultural and academic interests.
Preference is given to students of voice.
Recipients must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons, residents of Ontario
Must demonstrate financial need.

Jazz FM 91 Scholarship in Jazz
Value of Award: 1 at $1,000
Application Process: Must apply. Submission of Student Financial Profile is required.
Criteria:

Open to students majoring in music, with preference given to students who demonstrate talent in jazz performance.
Applicants must have completed a minimum of 24 credits at York University.
Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 7.50

Ron Weinberger Memorial Scholarship in Music
Value of Award: 3 at $500

Criteria:

Open to music majors, with preference given to students in music performance who demonstrate talent in piano, guitar or sitar instruments.

Criteria:

Given in recognition of outstanding achievement in an adjudicated performance to a Year 3 or 4 student in the classical performance stream in the Department of Music.

Saint Thyagaraja Music Award
Value of Bursary: 2 at $1125
Application Process: Student must complete a SFP and apply to award
Criteria:

The Saint Thyagaraja Music Awards are presented to full-time undergraduate music majors and non-majors in recognition of artistic and scholarly achievement in Indian classical music studies.
One award is given for demonstrated artistic excellence to a student enrolled in performance studies (vocal/instrumental) of Indian classical music.
A second award recognizes top standing in the academic study of Indian classical music.
Recipients must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons, be Ontario residents and demonstrate financial need.

Sorbara Award in Music
Value of Bursary: 2 at $2350
Application Process: Must complete SFP and apply to award
Criteria:

The Sorbara Award in Music recognizes outstanding creative achievement in music in the areas of composition, improvisation or sound design.
Awarded to Year 3 music majors who are pursuing studies full-time and who will be proceeding into Year 4 of study are eligible to apply for this award.
Awarded in the following academic year when student is registered as a full time continuing student.
Recipients must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons, residents of Ontario and demonstrate financial need.

Orpheus Award
Value of Award: 2 at $800
Application Process: Must complete SFP and apply to award
Criteria:

Two Orpheus Awards are given each year for outstanding achievement in adjudicated vocal performance to music majors in the classical performance stream.
Recipients must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons.
Must be residents of Ontario and demonstrate financial

Nancy Scoular Underhill Piano Award
Value of Award: 3 at $1000
Application Process: Must complete SFP and apply to award
Criteria:

The Nancy Scoular Underhill Piano Award is given in recognition of exceptional promise and ability in classical piano performance to a Year 2 music major.
Preference will be given to female students.

Value of Award: 1 subscription to Alumnae Theatre season

Prize is given for exceptional acting performance in a play presented by York during that year.
The prize is a free subscription to the four or five plays to be presented by the University Alumnae Dramatic Club at the Alumnae Theatre in the following season.

The Mac Shoub Scholarship

The Mac Shoub Scholarship is given in recognition of exceptional talent and achievement in acting to a theatre major entering Year 4 studies in the acting stream.

The Elizabeth Szathmary Scholarships will be given annually to four (4) full-time undergraduate students in the Department of Theatre, Faculty of Fine Arts
Must have completed two years of study as theatre majors.
The recipients will have attained minimum overall grade point averages of 7.50.
Recipients must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons
Must be residents of Ontario
Must demonstrate financial need. A student can only receive this scholarship once.

Anne Lazare-Mirvish Award

An annual book prize to be awarded to a Year 2 or 3 student in the graphics area of the Department of Visual Arts

L.L. Odette Sculpture Scholarship
Value of Award: 2 at $500

An annual scholarship will be awarded to a Year 4 student in the Department of Visual Arts.
The prime consideration for the award is merit in sculpture.
A secondary factor is overall academic standing.

The Louis Odette Sculpture Award

Given annually in recognition of promise and achievement in sculpture.
Visual arts majors who have completed at least one half course in sculpture are eligible to apply.

Willowdale Group of Artists Painting Award
Value of Award: 1 at $1,250
Application Process: Complete SFP and apply to award
Criteria:

Given to a student who is entering Year 4 of undergraduate study in the Department of Visual Arts who intends to enrol in the 4000-level painting course in their final year
Has achieved a grade of 7.00 (B+) or better in at least two painting courses at the 3000 level.
Recipient must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person and an Ontario resident who demonstrates financial need.
Recipients will also be given a solo exhibition of her/his paintings in the Gales Gallery in the winter term of his/her final year.
A painting portfolio is required (slides or CD format only).

Joseph Drapell Award
Value of Award: 4 at $500.00

Criteria:

Given annually to one or more visual arts majors in recognition of artistic and academic excellence.
Eligible students will be in Year 2 or a higher year of study in the BFA program.
Recipients must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons, be Ontario residents and demonstrate financial need.

Jennifer Ivey Bannock Digital Photography Bursary
Value of Award: 1 at $2000
Application Process: Complete SFP. No application required as faculty will nominate recipient.
Criteria:

Given annually to one student in their fourth year (having earned a minimum of 84 credits),
selected by faculty members in the Visual Arts program.
The recipient must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person
Must be resident of Ontario, who demonstrates financial need.
In addition, the recipient will be provided with an opportunity to exhibit in the Gales Gallery in the winter term and will be expected to present his/her work to fellow students concentrating on photography in the Visual Arts program.

Joan and Martin Goldfarb Scholarship
Value of Scholarship: 1 at $5000
Application Process: Complete SFP and apply to scholarlship
Criteria:

Awarded to an undergraduate visual arts student in recognition of outstanding creative and/or scholarly achievement.
Recipient must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 7.80 or higher and have earned a minimum of 18 credits.
Recipient must also be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person and resident of Ontario, who demonstrates financial need.

The Ken Carpenter Award
Value of Award: 2 at $800
Application Process: Must apply. Submission of Student Financial Profile is required.
Criteria:

Must be a Visual Arts major who is enrolled in at least one half-ourse in art history at the 3000 level.
OSOTF: Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person, and aresident of Ontario
Must demonstrate financial need

To apply for specific awards simply select 'Scholarships & Awards'. You must complete the Personal Statement section outlining how you meet the criteria for the scholarship for which you are applying.

Guidelines

Deadline
Student Financial Profiles and applications must be completed by Monday, October 18, 2010. Only profiles and applications completed before October 18 will be assessed and considered.

Demonstrating Financial Need
Many awards require demonstration of financial need. By completing your Student Financial Profile you will fulfill this criteria when applying. You are also encouraged to submit a written summary of your financial need within the application form.

Eligibility
Students are encouraged to apply for all awards for which they are eligible. Criteria for each award are listed on the Student Financial Services webpage.

Department vs. Pan-Faculty Awards
Some awards are available to all Faculty of Fine Arts students while others are department-specific. Please check the eligibility criteria carefully before submitting an application.

Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund (OSOTF)
All awards with OSOTF (Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund) criteria require completion of residency information which requires applicants to be Canadian citizens or permanent residents or have protected persons status, and be residents of Ontario.

Award Recipients & Funds
Students who are successful applicants (recipients) will have the funds applied to their student accounts, as per University policy. After this transaction occurs, each recipient will be sent a letter of congratulations from the Chair of the Faculty of Fine Arts Awards Committee.

First-Year Students
First-year students are encouraged to seek a letter of recommendation from a York professor. This letter should be confidential and should be sent by the referee to the student's home department.
