How To Apply

Admission to the Faculty of Fine Arts at York University is based on both academic and artistic criteria. The University sets academic admission standards, while artistic admissibility is assessed locally in each Fine Arts department.

Applying to the Department of Theatre at York is a two-step process:

STEP 1: Application to York University

Students currently enrolled full-time in an Ontario secondary school apply through their guidance office.

All other candidates, including international applicants, may get an application from the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC).

International applicants are also encouraged to visit York University's website for international students.

Deadline to submit your application to the University: February 1, 2012.

STEP 2: Departmental Evaluation

In addition to the regular academic requirements for admission to York University, Theatre applicants must satisfy the program’s evaluation requirements. You will receive an email from us with evaluation information once we have been advised of your application by OUAC and York University’s Admissions Office.

Please allow seven to 10 days for OUAC to forward your application to York. (Check your spam folder to ensure that our email has not gone there, and make sure that we have your correct, current email address.) If you have not heard from us within seven to 10 days, call the Department of Theatre at 416-736-5172.

Evaluations begin in late January. They are based on your academic record to-date (automatically reported by your school to the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre for current high school students) and are primarily directed to those who have a realistic chance of being academically admissible to the University. As a guide, the average required for admission to York's Department of Theatre in recent years has been in the upper 70s (a B+ average) for high school students and a B/B+ for current university/college students.

Once you have applied through OUAC (please wait 7 to 10 days), you must complete and submit your Supplemental Application together with your $50 evaluation fee (payable by VISA, American Express or MasterCard). You will now be directed to book your evaluation appointment.

If you are unable to book your evaluation appointment, it is possible that:

  • we do not have complete, up-to-date information on your grades; or
  • according to the information we do have, you do not meet the minimum requirement for entry to York University at this time.

Grade information is updated regularly; we encourage you to periodically check your status. New information may allow you to book an appointment at a later date.

For your evaluation, please bring a small, passport-sized photo for identification purposes and two letters of reference. Please note that referees can provide references online which must be submitted at least one week before your evaluation. You will need to provide your name and York student number to your referee for online submission.
