Visual Arts Highlights

Facilities
Our facilities are outstanding, including large sky-lit painting and drawing studios, computer labs and video editing suites, colour and black & white photography studios, a wide range of print media studios, a cutting-edge digital sculpture lab and the Odette Sculpture Centre - one of the best facilities of its kind in North America. The Joan Goldfarb Visual Arts Study Centre houses a large collection of original contemporary Canadian art. Students also benefit from the opportunity to exhibit their work in the Gales Gallery and Special Project Gallery of the Department of Visual Artsd, as well as a number of other student-run galleries on campus. And throughout the year, the nationally renowned Art Gallery of York University presents work by some of the world's leading contemporary artists.

Faculty
Being in touch with the latest trends and traditions in the art world is imperative for developing artists. Our studio faculty -- practising artists who are leaders in their fields -- offer a balanced curriculum of practicum and issues-based courses. Work by faculty members is on view in the Fine Arts complex and can be found in private and public collections around the world.

Alumni
Our graduates have played an important role in the emergence of Toronto as one of the world’s great cultural centres. Many show regularly in professional galleries, or have have established collectives for exhibiting their work. Others have gone on to hold key positions in public and private galleries, the contemporary art media, video and photographic cooperatives, and other artist-run spaces. Some graduates have returned to pursue advanced studies leading to Master's or PhD degrees. These outstanding young artists are among Canada’s best. They inspire and challenge us all with their ongoing work and their direct contact with undergraduates as mentors and instructors.

Accomplishments
Over the years, our students have created many projects and site-specific artworks that are installed in the Fine Arts complex and other buildings at York University. You'll have the chance to view some of these works when you visit campus.
