Hey Founders!
To those of you coming to York for the first time, welcome to Founders College! To those of you coming back, I hope you enjoyed your summer. My name is Nahom Hiowt and I'm your president for the 2012-2013 year. On behalf of Founders College Student Council I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you and especially congratulate our incoming first year students.
To those of you just coming into university for the first time I know how overwhelming and intimidating it can all seem. A new place with new people and a campus that sprawls between Finch, Jane, Steeles and Keele Street can all be a little daunting. But, I'm here to tell you that Founders College is here to help you make that transition from wherever you happen to be coming from. Whether its Frosh Week during the last week of summer vacation or events throughout the year we're here to help make university as fun as possible.
As an Environmental Studies Student, Founders has been my home away from home since day one. I joined our intramural sports teams, spent time in The Lounge (FC 004) and attended college events. My involvement with my college has shaped me over the past three years and I can honestly say I would be a completely different person today if I hadn't. For me, being involved with my college made the difference from just putting up with university to actually enjoying it. Chances are that if Founders has affected me positively, then it can do the same for you.
Founders College has been around since 1965 which means we've been around for almost 50 years, making us York's oldest college. Don't ever think for a minute that makes us boring though, as our college is made up of the most diverse group of individuals around. Drop into "The Lounge" (FC 004) and don't be surprised if you find conversations about global politics, the economy, superheroes, the latest and greatest in technology or what's on sale at the mall all happening at once. Founders has always been about bringing people together no matter their background, field of study or college affiliation and this idea is represented in our motto: Founders United.
I can only say so much to help you understand what Founders is about, what it means to me or what it can do for you. I can't make you drop into The Lounge or the FCSC Offices (FC121B) or attend our great events. YOU make your university experience what you want it to be, YOU make your memories of university some of your greatest ones and only YOU can take the first step. It all starts with being involved in your college. So if you've been around, come around again and if you haven't stop by and see what your college has to offer you. Welcome to Founders College.
