Advanced Genetics

 

 

 Course Description:

 

This core course will address recent advances in Drosophila, C. elegans  and plant genetics.  Techniques such as genetic dissection, mutagenesis, genetic screens, methods for manipulating genes, chromosomal analysis, transposon and enhancer tagging, positional cloning and QTL analyses will be included in the lecture topics.

The course will be offered as 3 hr lectures per week for a 6 week period.

 Prerequisite: Undergraduate Introductory Genetics Course.

Evaluation:

 

1 Seminar (one hour in length) – oral presentation derived from the primary literature chosen by the student in consultation with the course director.

1 Research Grant Proposal (15 pages long) on a topic unrelated to the student’s thesis work.  The research grant will include a literature survey, a research proposal of at least eight experiments including a rationale for the experiments, the experimental design, the methods for data collection and analyses and interpretations of the experimental outcomes.  The research grant will also include a summary of short and long term research goals.
