Biography

David Checkland joined the Department of Philosophy at Ryerson in 1993 after teaching at York University, Wilfrid Laurier University, the University of Toronto and the University of Ottawa. He has written works on applied ethics and mental competence. He is a member of the Ethics Network at Ryerson University and focuses on healthcare and media ethics.

Research Interests

Philosophy of language, pragmatic and semantic aspects of communication; media rights and obligations in democracies; representation of collective responsibilities in media; applied ethics; decision-making, and issues of personal responsibility related to these.

Harold [Innis] taught us how to use the bias of culture and communication as an instrument of research. By directing attention to the bias, or distorting power of the dominant imagery and technology of any culture, he showed us how to understand cultures.
