MFA in Dance - How to Apply
Who should apply?
The MFA program is designed for the highly motivated graduate student intent on addressing aesthetic, cultural, social, political and personal questions through diverse forms of contemporary dance. Students may range from emerging choreographers to established artists representing a wealth of dance practices, approaches and traditions. Taking into account the multiplicity of possible dance forms, contemporary dance, in this context, is generally understood to be physical practice incorporating movement research, choreographic invention, and theatrical devices. For the inaugural class of the new MFA we will be accepting six (6) students.
What are the Admission Requirements?
Normally candidates for the MFA in Choreography and Dance Dramaturgy will have a BFA in dance, or equivalent, with a B+ average or above in the last two years of study. Candidates are expected to enter with a solid background in choreography and a good knowledge of dance history and dance aesthetics. Candidates are required to submit video examples of their most recent choreography, a statement outlining their objectives in pursuing this MFA, as well as letters of reference. The MFA Graduate Admissions Committee will review the applications and conduct interviews in person or by telephone as required. Admission is based on consideration of all the elements mentioned above. (See MFA Supplementary Information Form)
